Plus One & Plus Two English Notes: XI & XII Class English Notes

The Higher Secondary English Course Book is designed to meet the increasing demands of students at a challenging and competent age. It mainly focuses on helping learners use language efficiently and appropriately in the situations they face. All units are based on specific objectives focused on learner outcomes. To know the progress of the study, the assessments are done through two types of assessment - continuous and comprehensive assessment (CE) and word evaluation (TE).

Continuous and comprehensive evaluation

CCE is used to ensure the learner's participation in the learning process, his comprehension skills, the ability to present acquired knowledge, the clarity of his concept and his originality. CE is done in 3 types - learning process assessment, portfolio assessment, unit based assessment. . The maximum score for CE is 20.

Word evaluation

Unlike other subjects, assessment is done here considering language elements, discourses, language skills. The maximum number is 80.

Units at a glance

There are 6 units in the English Course Book. Each unit includes chapters such as prose, poetry, drama etc. and are also linked topically.

Higher Secondary First Year (Plus One) English

UNIT 1: GLIMPSES OF GREATNESS

Four chapters are there in the first Unit
  • His First Flight (story)
  • I will Fly (speech)
  • Quest For the Theory of Everything(Profile) and
  • IF(poem)
  • This Unit introduces unique characters who motivate the learners to dream high. It stresses the need to develop self-confidence and fight against the hardships and overcome them.
  • Activities on focus - Read and comprehend stories, speeches, profiles, personal essays, writing reviews, prepare interview questions, and using cohesive devices and conditionals effectively.
UNIT 2: WORDS AND DEEDS

Three Chapters are there in the Second unit
  • And Then Gandhi Came (Essay)
  • Death the Leveller (Poem)
  • The Price of Flowers (Short story)
  • It creates an awareness that good deeds give meaning to life. It upholds the significance of values and attitudes in life.
  • Activities on Focus – Note making, speech, drafting letters, character sketches, using concord appropriately, literary elements etc:-
UNIT 3: BEYOND THE HORIZON
  • Three Chapters are there in the Third unit.
  • Sunrise on the Hills (poem)
  • The Trip of Lahore (Short story)
  • Sacred Turtles of Kandavu (based on Fijian legend)
UNIT 4: BRAVING THE HAZARDS

Three Chapters are there in the Fourth unit.
  • Disasters and Disaster management(Essay)
  • Serang of Ranaganji (Short story)
  • The Wreck of the Titanic (poem)
  • This unit familiarizes the students with the major disasters, its causes, and disaster management as well. The poem is also about one of the greatest disasters in the sea, the wreck of the Titanic on its maiden voyage. 
  • Activities on Focus –note making, précis writing, report writing, letter writing, critical appreciation, use of language elements like participles, adverbs, passive forms of verbs etc.
UNIT 5: HARMONY OF LIFE

The Chapters are
  • Gooseberry (Story)
  • To Sleep (poem)
  • Going Out for a walk (Essay)
  • Here students discuss the role of health and wellness for a successful life and understand the necessity of proper rest in order to have a peaceful mind and happiness. They get familiar with the features of the personal essay.
  • Activities on Focus – seminar report, welcome speech, understanding the structure of the exclamatory sentence, framing questions, preparing critical appreciation of poem etc.
UNIT 6: LEAPS AND BOUNDS

The Chapters are
  • Cyberspace (Essay)
  • Is society dead? (Article)
  • Conceptual Fruit (Short story)
  • Varied aspects of technology and it's economic, sociological, cultural and philosophical dimensions are discussed here. It also attempts to study the influence of technology in our lives and the future challenges of iPod generation.
  • Activities on focus – persuasive essay writing, email writing, report writing, writing reports on interviews etc.
For Theory Examination(TE) preparation:
  • Activities based on text be practiced. Speech, profile, emails, write-ups. etc related to textual content be given focus.
  • Debates, discussions, interviews on textual and general – should be practiced
  • Character sketches and review writing are prominent.
  • Letter writing, report writing, note making, précis writing, essay writing - text-based but with general ideas be done with.
  • Travel brochures, travel essay, travel info, live TV report has to be focused.
  • Cohesive devices, Concord, editing, if clause etc must be familiarized.
  • The format of each type of activities is especially followed.
  • Textual content is familiarized whereas it should be modified with personal ideas and language as required in the examination.
  • Language elements should be made clear to enhance answering application level questions. 
It is about the journey to explore knowledge and how it proves to be a different entertaining and informative experience.

Activities on focus - drafting script of live TV report, preparing travel brochure, writing travel essays and information, writing, narrating events from various points of view, debating, etc.

XI /XII Hindi Notes


Higher Secondary First Year (Plus Two) English

The English Course Book for the second year has been developed on the basis of specific subjects and concepts so that it enhances its language skills to meet its requirements after completion of the higher secondary course. It contains various literary works - short stories, poems, plays, interviews etc. Due importance is given to grammatical elements. An integrated approach is adopted for the purpose of students' linguistic and practical ability. There are five units.

UNIT 1: FLIGHTS OF FREEDOM

The Chapters are
  • The 3Ls of Empowerment (speech)
  • Any Woman (poem)
  • Horegallu (anecdote)
  • Match Box (Story)
  • This unit analyses the concept of women empowerment, the rights and privileges of women and her multifarious role. It upholds the importance of freedom for women also. The story displays the typical Indian woman and how she endures her male chauvinist husband.
  • Activities on focus: speech, panel discussion, poem review, designing blurb, narrating events from different points of view, analyzing characters etc.
UNIT 2: HEIGHTS OF HARMONY

The Chapters are
  • Mending Wall (poem)
  • Amigo Brothers (Story)
  • The Hour of Truth (one-act play)
  • It helps the students to develop values like honesty, friendship, love, truthfulness etc. Also, it presents the dangers of misusing one’s power.
  • Activities on focus: appreciating the poem, character sketches, preparing and presenting announcements for various programmes, writing reviews, making news reports, preparing for debates and language practice – tense, reported speech, voice etc:-
UNIT 3: CHALLENGES OF LIFE

Chapters - 
  • A Three Wheeled Revolution (interview)
  • Didi (life writing)
  • Stammer (Poem)
  • The concept of social entrepreneurship and the importance of social commitments are introduced here.
  • Activities on focus: creating blogs, preparing job application and resume writing, responding to interview questions, writing emails, using idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs.
UNIT 4: LIVE AND LET LIVE

Chapters - 
  • When A Sapling is Planted? (speech)
  • Rice (poem)
  • Dangers of Drug Abuse (essay)
  • This unit insists on the need for preserving nature, the values of farming and the impacts of reducing the significance of the agriculture sector and commercialization of it. Also, it creates an awareness of health hazards due to overuse of drugs. 
  • Activities on focus: drafting letters of inquiry, write-ups on current social issues, preparing short essays, understanding different language expressions adverbial phrases etc.
UNIT 5: THE LIGHTER SIDE

Chapters – 
  • Post Early For Christmas ( one-act play)
  • This is Going to Hurt a Little Bit ( poem)
  • Crime and Punishment ( Story)
  • This unit depicts a sense of humor. The story presents the significant role of Parent and teacher in the life of a student.
  • Activities on focus: poem appreciation, writing scripts, writing arguments for debate and using ‘as if’ and prepositions.
  • For Theory Examination(TE) preparation:
  • Textual content must be clear to the students.
  • Preparation is done to answer varied forms of questions – objective type, multiple choice, short answer, and essay type etc.
  • Write-ups, reviews, essays, character sketches, narrations – based on texts be expressed in own words. In addition to this, your own points related to the concept would make a better answer.
  • Topic related debates and interviews can be expected.
  • e-mails, job applications, letters of inquiry – be given special attention
  • Practices on report writing (newspaper report, seminar reports, and reports for school magazine), blog and blurb writing would be helpful.
  • Announcements/comparing and script writing be familiarized.

MUST KNOW (Plus One & Plus Two) 

  • Students are advised to follow the right format of each activity.
  • Textual content and general ideas related to the topic be get readied for better performance 
  • Grammar part must be worked out at the application level.
  • A score of each question is taken into care while answering questions.
  • In the case of language, along with the content, organization of ideas, presentation, originality of language and competence in it will be considered.
