About Shree Agrasen Mahavidyalaya
The origin of Shree Agrasen Mahavidyalaya may be traced to the proposals for establishment of some new colleges in North Bengal during the period of nineties. Dalkhola was naturally a strong claimant for establishment of a new college in the locality. There was sufficient justification for establishment of a college, as there was no such institution for higher education within a radius of 50 km. The area had been totally neglected during the period of British Rule in complete indifference to the backwardness of its population. Even after independence, we have not found any significant change in the area. The area densely inhabited by the scheduled caste, schedule tribe and minority people was exceptionally very underdeveloped and economically backward. Dalkhola is, however a very good commercial center having small scale industries and big business houses spread over a large area. It is also better known for its strategic location connecting Purnia in Bihar and Siliguri, the gateway to the entire North-Eastern area of India. There are also sufficient number of Higher Secondary Schools having the ability to provide students to the college. The students of the area, after successful completion of school education had no opportunity for higher education. Dalkhola is located almost 50 km. away from both Islampur and district town of Raiganj having colleges of their own, not easily assessable because of poor, irregular and costly transport facilities and as such, most of the students belonging to the poor class could not avail of the scope of higher studies.
With the missionary ideals in heart, hunger for knowledge in mind, untiring efforts, noble sacrifices, unmixed stewardship and bold initiative of the local people of Dalkhola in general, an attempt was made by them for establishment of a college in the locality. Construction work was started under the untiring leadership of some local people who had built the college up, brick by brick from a desolate grass land to a modern institution of higher education. The people who were closely associated with the formation of the college from its very inception contributed very much in providing adequate assistance required for its construction. Consequently, Shree Agrasen Mahavidyalaya was brought into existence as a center for higher education on the auspicious day of 1st September, 1995 to fulfill the increasing desire and demand for higher studies in the locality after a long period of 48 years of our independence. Shree Agrasen Mahavidyalaya was the perfect one of which right choice of location was made for providing encouragement and patronage to the poor and backwards students. It is located at Bhusamani at a distance of 2.5 km. from the nearest railway station of Dalkhola and 500 meters away from National Highway 34 (N.H.- 34) possessing a good campus comprising 3.88 acres of land enriched with the potentiality for developing it further into an ideal, modern and progressive institution for higher education. Its location, far away from busy crowed, is really very suitable for sustainable studies with rapt attention.
Shree Agrasen Mahavidyalaya located at an ideal site within the Municipal area surrounded by picturesque landscape with ever green, calm and quite atmosphere free from pollution, din and bustle of Municipal crowed, is the sixth degree college in the district of present Uttar Dinajpur (then West Dinajpur). It was initially affiliated to the University of North Bengal. Subsequently it comes under the jurisdiction of the University of Gour Banga. So it is now affiliated to the University of Gour Banga. Meanwhile, it has come into limelight for its brilliant performance and excellent result of the students in the university examinations comparable with many other star colleges of the University. Within a very short span of time, it has exceptionally attained the significant growth and excellence in the field of higher education. The Mahavidyalaya was honored by the International Business Council, New Delhi with National Udyog Excellence Award in 2004. But it has still long way to go to achieve.
