Another short story by Tagore is Castaway, which I have just finished reading. The story revolves around a Zamindar family resting in Chandarnagur to heal their daughter-in-law Kiran.

The story begins with a short discussion between Kiran and her husband Sarath, in which they discuss whether they should stay in this retreat for a while or return to their village. Kiran wants to go back, but Sarath wants to stay there for a while to recover.

Their friendly heartfelt mockery continues, and as a sudden event, makes a big difference in their family. A young Brahmin named Neelkanth is caught in an angry Ganga and comes to their house.

The kind family accepts the young man as their own member. Soon Neelkanth approaches Kiran, who decorates the young man with the most beautiful gifts and food.

Sarath realizes that Neil is nothing more than a simple child and his wife has taken him. He is a careless brat, perhaps hard-hearted and neglected to beat because of his experience in the theater. He regrets his decision to put the boy under his wing, yet remains a mummy because of his wife.

Meanwhile, Neelkanth, who is enjoying life for the first time, enjoys his carefree life.

However, the situation changes when Sarath's younger brother Satheesh comes to stay with them. Neil feels that Kiran was neglected for the first time because she is friendly with her fianc and now spends her entire leisure time with him. Neil himself seems insignificant and not even visible to the family. One thing leads to another, and he runs away after committing a crime in the household.

The story is a perfect eruption of traditional and modern values that was going on in the society of that time. It highlights the customs prevalent in Bengal, and leisure trips to the air were very common for the sick person. Although the attitudes of Sarath and his mother are modern, their opposition to Neil's paradoxes is indicative of their social status. Since the boy has worked in theaters, he does not have much respect for the mother and son who firmly believe in maintaining the sanctity of the Brahminical traditions.

Tagore, on the other hand, also hints at the possibility that Neil will impress Kiran. However, the author deals with this subject in a very subtle and mature way.
