- The Revolt of 1857 was the starting of the freedom struggle of independence. This was the first time that the people of India broke the silence and had raised their voices against the Britishers. This resulted in the end of the rule of East India Company in the nation and it came into the hands of the British crown.
- The formation of the Indian National Congress took place in the year 1885 by A.O. Hume. This was an important step in the freedom struggle of Independence.
- The Champaran Satyagraha was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1917. The farmers of Champaran protested silently for not forcing them to grow indigo in their fields.
- Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that took place in the year 1919 is stated as one of the most brutal movements in the history of India. People had gathered in large numbers to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi in Amritsar. The order by General Dyer to open fire on the mob resulted in killing more than 350 people in the incident. This incident gave speed to the freedom struggle for independence.

The Indians did not like the British rulers. They are freedom lovers. They could not tolerate the slavery of the British. There was resentment among the Indian soldiers. Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor, was declared the emperor of Hindustan. Jhansi, Gwalior, Kahpur, Meerut and Delhi were the main centers of this rising. All the leaders fought bravely. The Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai, dressed as soldier and led her forces against the British. She fought bravely and died for the freedom of the motherland. Nana Sahib was also killed while fighting against the British forces. Bahadur Shah Zafar was taken prisoner and was sent to Rangoon in Burma, where he died an unsung death. The British were able to put down this rising.
The British, however learnt a lesson. The Government of India came under the British Crown. The Company rule was gone. Queen Victoria was the ruler of England at that time.
