It is a festival of showing our gratitude towards Lord Krishna. Krishna was born in Dvapara Yuga actually it was lord Vishnu who incarnated himself as Krishna. Whenever there is injustice in society there is positive energy born to save us. It was Lord Krishna who promoted people to pray to the mountain instead of Lord Indra for rain.

Krishna explained that the mountain is the main source of their livelihood. It gives us water, food, etc. As a result, people started following him and lord Indra didn’t like it. So, lord Indra planned to punish them by raining continuously for a week, as lord Indra is known for rain in Hinduism.

As a result, the entire Vrindavan immersed in water, people went to Krishna for help, and Lord Krishna raised the Govardhan parvat on his small finger and saved people. Then Lord Brahma told Indra that Krishna is the incarnation of Vishnu. Indra felt sorry and he stopped the rain. After this incident, every year people celebrate this occasion as Govardhan puja. It is also known as Annakut puja.

‘Govardhan Puja’ is a famous festival of Hindus. It is celebrated all over India. Every year this festival is celebrated on the next day of Diwali. Govardhan Puja is also known as “Annakoot Puja” in some parts of India. This day is celebrated with great fanfare from North India to South India.

In Govardhan Puja, Godhan i.e. cows are worshipped. It has been told in the scriptures that the cow is as pure as the Ganges in the rivers. The cow is also said to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi. Just as Goddess Lakshmi provides happiness and prosperity, in the same way cow mother also provides wealth in the form of health with her milk.

Govardhan Puja is an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated every year. People make idols of Lord Shri Krishna and serve different types of food and sweets. Women worship and sing hymns on this day and they also garland the cows and apply tilak on them and also worship them.

On this day people make a mountain out of cow dung in the courtyard of their house and worship it by lighting a lamp of water, moli, roli, rice, flower curd and oil. After this, the circumambulation of this mountain made of cow dung is done.

Introduction

Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the following day of Deepawali in the Hindu calendar month of Karthik. On this day the devotees prepare large varieties of vegetarian food to be offered to Lord Krishna. The festival has a special significance for the people of Vaishnav tradition. Vaishnav people worship Vishnu and Krishna is believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu.

When is Govardhan Puja Celebrated?

The festival is celebrated on the first lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik which is also the fourth day of the Diwali festival and the first day Vikram Samvat calendar.

The Mythological Story

There is a mythological story as to why Govardhan puja is celebrated. The story is related to one of Krishna’s many childhood incidents and is also mentioned in the Bhagavatha Purana. The story states that the people of Gokul worshipped Govardhan Parvat for providing necessary supplements and green cover to them. But, some of the cow herders around Govardhan Parvat worshipped Indra, the God of rain and storm. Krishna didn’t approve of this and suggested that they all should rather worship the mountain as it has more value.

Enraged by the Krishna’s view of him, Indra reflected his anger by bringing a fury of torrential rain and storm on the people of Gokul. Having no place to go, the people turned to Krishna who was highly respected for his conduct and powers.

In order to save the people from storm, Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain by his little finger and saved the people by letting them sheltered under the mountain. After around 7 to 8 days of continuous rain and storm and seeing that he couldn’t harm the people of Gokul, Indra finally backed off. This day is therefore celebrated as Govardhan Puja.

How is Govardhan Puja Celebrated?

On this day a great offering of food is prepared for the mountain as a mark of gratitude for saving lives of Gokul residents. Lord Krishna thus assumes the form of mountain and consumes the offerings.

Since then the Govardhan Parvat in Braj has become a major pilgrimage site for the devotees. Thousands of devotees circumambulate the mountain on the day of Govardhan Puja, chanting hymns and songs all the way.

Annkut festival is also celebrated in which offerings are made to the God in form of stairs and the devotees consume a portion of the offering as Prasad after the rituals get over. Hindus not only in India but also throughout the world eagerly celebrate Govardhan Puja and Annkut as a part of Diwali festival.

Conclusion

The Govardhan Puja festival denotes the deep faith that the devotees have in their God. They believe to the core that their God is always more than eager to help if called for. They express their love and devotion to their beloved God by offering food and by worshipping.

FAQs on Paragraph on Govardhan Puja in English

Few Lines on Importance of Govardhan Puja??

Govardhan Puja (IAST: Govardhana-pūjā), also known as Annakut or Annakoot (meaning a “mountain of food”), is a Hindu festival in which devotees worship Govardhan Hill and prepare and offer a large variety of vegetarian food to Krishna as a mark of gratitude. For Vaishnavas, this day commemorates the incident in the Bhagavata Purana when Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to provide the villagers of Vrindavan shelter from torrential rains. The incident is seen to represent how God will protect all devotees who take singular refuge in him. Devotees offer a mountain of food, metaphorically representing the Govardhan Hill, to God as a ritual remembrance and to renew their faith in taking refuge in God. The festival is observed by most of Hindu denominations all over India and abroad.

For Vaishnavas, particularly the Pushtimarg of Vallabha, the Gaudiya Sampradaya of Chaitanya and the Swaminarayan Sampradaya, it is one of the important festivals. The Annakut festival occurs on the first lunar day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the month of Kartik, which is the day after Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
