The term ‘Islam’ is of Arabic origin, meaning ‘submission’, and the followers of this religion founded by the Prophet Muhammad are Muslims—those who submit (to God).
According to Muslims, God sent a number of prophets to mankind to teach them how to live according to His law.
Jesus, Moses and Abraham are respected as prophets of God. Muslims believe that the final Prophet was Muhammad. They also believe that Islam has always existed, but for practical purposes, date their religion from the time of the migration of Muhammad.
The word of God was revealed to Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel and his messengers and it is embodied in the Quran. Muslims base their laws on their holy book, the Quran, and the Sunnah. The Sunnah is considered to be the practical example of Prophet Muhammad.
The basic tenets of Islam are belief in the one God, Allah; belief in Muhammad as the final prophet and messenger of God; and belief that the life on earth is a period of testing and preparation for the life to come after the Judgement Day when everyone shall be recompensed by God according to the actions performed.
The followers of Islam are bound to certain duties: the five ritual prayers every day; a weekly uma prayer on Friday noons; a dawn-to-dusk fast in the month of Ramzan; a pilgrimage to Mecca for the annual congregation of hajj at least once in a lifetime; and payment of zakat (charity) to the poor and needy.
There are two mains sects in Islam: Sunni and Shia. The division between Sunnis and Shias is the largest and oldest in the history of Islam. Both sects agree on the fundamentals of Islam and consider the Quran as their holy book, but there are differences mostly derived from their different historical experiences, political and social developments, as well as ethnic composition.
These differences originate from the question of who would succeed the Prophet Muhammad as leader of the emerging Muslim community after his death. Sunnis argue that the Prophet chose Abu Bakr to lead the congregational prayers as he lay on his deathbed, thus suggesting that the Prophet was naming Abu Bakr as the next leader.
The Shias’ evidence is that Muhammad stood up in front of his companions on the way back from his last Hajj, and proclaimed his son- in-law, Ali, the spiritual guide and master of all believers. It was only later that these terms came into use. Sunni means ‘one who follows the Sunnah’ (what the Prophet said, did, agree to or condemned).
Shia is a contraction of the phrase ‘Shiat Ali’, meaning ‘partisans of Ali’. It is necessary that the word ‘successor’ is not taken to mean that those leaders that came after the Prophet Muhammad were also prophets; both Shia and Sunni agree that Muhammad was the final prophet. All Muslims are required to pray five times a day.
However, Shia practice permits combining some prayers into three daily prayer times. A Shia at prayer can often be identified by a small tablet of clay from a holy place (often Karbala), on which they place their forehead whilst prostrating. The majority of Muslims in
Islam came first to India with Arab traders on the west coast, but spread with the conquest of the north-west areas. There are four schools of jurisprudence—Hanafi, Shafei, Maliki and Hambali.
The coming of Islam brought about a fusion of two vibrant cultures, and Indo-Islamic styles in art and architecture, music and literature evolved. A peculiar interaction between Islamic thoughts and the bhakti movement of medieval India is said to have contributed to the Sufi movement in India.

FAQs on Paragraph on Islam in English
Few Lines on Importance of Islam??
Islam (/ˈɪslɑːm/; Arabic: الإسلام, al-ʿIslām [ɪsˈlaːm], transl. 'Submission [to God]') is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion, centred primarily around the Quran, a religious text that is considered by Muslims to be the direct word of the God of Abraham (or Allah) as it was revealed to Muhammad, the main and final Islamic prophet. It is the world's second-largest religion with more than two billion followers, comprising around 25 percent of the global population. Islam teaches that God is merciful, all-powerful, and unique, and has guided humanity through various prophets, revealed scriptures, and natural signs, with the Quran serving as the final and universal revelation and Muhammad serving as the 'Seal of the Prophets' (the last prophet of God). The teachings and practices of Muhammad (sunnah) documented in traditional collected accounts (hadith) provide a secondary constitutional model for Muslims to follow after the Quran.
Muslims believe that Islam is the complete and universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed many times through earlier prophets such as Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, among others; these earlier revelations are attributed to Judaism and Christianity, which are regarded in Islam as spiritual predecessor faiths. They also consider the Quran, when preserved in Classical Arabic, to be the unaltered and final revelation of God to humanity. Like other Abrahamic religions, Islam also teaches of a 'Final Judgement' wherein the righteous will be rewarded in paradise (Jannah) and the unrighteous will be punished in hell (Jahannam). Religious concepts and practices include the Five Pillars of Islam, which are considered to be obligatory acts of worship, as well as following Islamic law (sharia), which touches on virtually every aspect of life and society from banking and finance and welfare to women's roles and the environment. The cities of Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem are home to the three holiest sites in Islam, in descending order: Masjid al-Haram, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
From a historical point of view, Islam originated in the 7th century at Jabal al-Nour, a mountain peak near Mecca where Muhammad's first revelation is said to have taken place. Through various caliphates, the religion later spread outside of Arabia shortly after Muhammad's death, and by the 8th century, the Umayyad Caliphate had imposed Islamic rule from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to the Indus Valley in the east. The Islamic Golden Age refers to the period traditionally dated from the 8th century to the 13th century, during the reign of the Abbasid Caliphate, when much of the Muslim world was experiencing a scientific, economic, and cultural flourishing. The expansion of the Muslim world involved various states and caliphates as well as extensive trade and religious conversion as a result of Islamic missionary activities (dawah).
There are two notable Islamic denominations that account for most Muslims' adherence: Sunni Islam (85–90 percent) and Shia Islam (10–15 percent); combined, they make up a majority of the population in 49 countries. While Sunni–Shia differences initially arose from disagreements over the succession to Muhammad, they grew to cover a broader dimension both theologically and juridically, with the divergence acquiring notable political significance. Approximately 12 percent of the world's Muslims live in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority country; 31 percent live in South Asia; 20 percent live in the Middle East–North Africa; and 15 percent live in sub-Saharan Africa. Sizable Muslim communities are also present in the Americas, China, and Europe. Muslims are the 'fastest-growing major religious group' due to a higher fertility rate compared to adherents of other religions.
