Students can find below a paragraph of Radioactive Pollution in 100-150 words or essay on Radioactive Pollution in 100 words:

The pollution caused by the nuclei of radioactive atoms is called radioactive pollution. In continuation with the above paragraph, here are some causes of radioactive pollution:

  • The Explosion of radioactive bombardments
  • Mining
  • Nuclear Test
  • Accidental leakage of radioactive elements
  • Radiation emitting pollutants
  • The Smoke produced by the explosion of mines
  • Poisonous Chemicals released by the radioactive wastes
  • Ionized fuel rods wastes
  • Isotopes released nuclear wastes
  • Wastes released from the nuclear weapons and nuclear power plant
  • Nuclear testing labs waste considered as highly reactive

Nuclear pollution is hazardous for all living organisms. Their exposure in our environment can cause several serious health and environmental problems. Some portion of the airborne pollution consists of radioactive wastes. Toxicity and temperature of atmosphere sometimes increased due to exposure of fine particles of nuclei based pollution. In Japan, some cities have faced nuclear-based destruction.

Students can find below a paragraph of Radioactive Pollution in 200-250 words or essay on Radioactive Pollution in 200 words:

Radioactive pollution is caused by radioactive wastes. When radioactive garbage is not treated properly, they came into contact with the environment. Now we are going to explain the preventive measures of radioactive pollution:

Disposal of radioactive wastage: Proper treatment of radioactive scraps and wastes is necessary. Industries have to keep open their eyes to the disposal of radioactive wastes. Radioactive user industries should appoint a specific unit for keeping an eye on the waste treatment.

Prohibition on the nuclear test: On a global level, nuclear tests should be banned. The nuclear test produces various harmful chemicals for the environment. So, their prohibition can reduce the toxicity of radioactive elements submerged in our atmosphere.

Specifying the Radioactive elements present in any product: It is highly recommended to industries. If they label their products by highlighting the radioactive elements present in it. It will act as a protective gear for their further use.

Renew and Reuse: Reusing the scraps of the radioactive elements can be the best option. Renewing will also reduce the chances of wasting.

Keeping Radioactive Elements Safe: Proper storage of radioactive substances will reduce the chances of accidental leakage.

Shifting to other Sources of Energy: Nuclear energy is useful and harmful both. In order to reduce damages of nuclear energy, focusing on the benefits of other sources of energy is feasible. Solar energy, hydro-energy, wind-energy, etc. are some of the sources of energy.

Setup of the Nuclear Power Station: Before setting up the Nuclear Power Station, it is necessary to have a quick survey on the social life dwelling there.

Paragraph on Radioactive Pollution in 300 Words / Essay on Radioactive Pollution in 300-500 Words

Students can find below a paragraph of Radioactive Pollution in 300-500 words or essay on Radioactive Pollution in 300 words:

Radiation pollution is a physical type of environmental pollution. The main radiation hazards in the environment come from ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Basically radioactive material is unstable energy. Its exposure causes extreme effects on human beings as well as on plants and animals. It can kill plants, animals and human beings too or at least causes serious health problems and diseases.

Nations greed’s to become ‘SUPER POWERS’ and to exploit the natural resources gifted to us by God and to sustain life on this beautiful earth is increasing the problem of pollution at an alarming rate. Besides the hazards of the major pollutions i.e. air, water soil and noise we are also exposed to radiation pollution, which is a much more serious problem as its action is very fast and highly deleterious.

Radiation pollution is caused by anything that releases radioactive matter. This includes installation of nuclear power plants, nuclear testing. X-ray, fluoroscopy, radars. Besides these now-a-days the equipment’s and appliances used to enhance the standard of living and the means of communication i.e., mobile phones and appliances used to make cooking easy like microwave oven and above all the colour television, which have now become the indispensable part of modern living, all are contributing towards radiation pollution to a large extent.

In the past few decades a large number of nuclear explosions have been conducted in different parts of the world. Nuclear explosions are very rapid and according to a rough estimate, in an explosion about 50% of the energy goes to the blast, 33% as heat and the rest 17% as to radioactivity fall out.

The half-life time of so produced radionuclides varies from a few seconds to thousand years. These radio nuclides get distributed throughout the environment and are transmitted to man through food chain. On consumption by man some radionuclides become concentrated in specific organs where they become injurious to health.

There is no reliable and appropriate method of disposal of radioactive waste like spent nuclear fuels, gaseous effluents and other low level wastes. Neither there is any reliable method of storing the radioactive waste, which is produced in huge amounts every year.

Of late we have heard on T.V. channel news and read in newspapers about the radiation exposure from cobalt-60, in a scrap shop from Mayapuri area of Delhi, which caused serious health problems primarily to the people working in shop and to the residents of that area too. Similarly, radiations from mobile towers are also causing radiation pollution.

So in Delhi many mobile towers are being removed by the order of court. Every now and then we hear about radiation exposure in one or the other place. The catas trophic tragedy occurred in Japan, added to the radiation pollution not only in country but in pacific region and other places as well. The radiation exposure is not confined to that place alone, with time it spreads to the other places and ultimately, the whole environment is polluted.

Radionuclides of Radium, Thorium, Uranium and isotopes of Potassium. (K-40), and Carbon (C-14) are commonly found in soil, rocks, air and water due to the weathering of atomic minerals. Generally marine sediments have higher, concentration of radionuclides.

On an average we receive about 50 m rads/yr from terrestrial radiations, but in areas where uranium containing rocks are found like Kerala, it may be as high as 2000 rads/yr. We also receive radiations from our atmosphere as radioactive gases like thoron and radon are present in air but fortunately their amount is quite low i.e., roughly 2 m rad/yr.

Man is also exposed to internal radiations as some radioactive substances like Uranium, Thorium and isotopes of Potassium, Strontium and Carbon exist in small amounts in our body tissues. The exposure from internal radiation varies from 25 to 75 m rads/yr.

Besides this internal radiation we are also exposed to background radiation. Radiation permeates the entire universe the solar system and our planet earth. Rays of sun contain the steady stream of solar radiation consisting of visible light, UV, IR and gamma rays into the space.

Much of the solar radiation is screened out by the atmosphere otherwise it will become lethal to all the living beings. Some of the incoming radiations are trapped by earth’s magnetic field. The part of the atmosphere called magnetosphere constitutes an area of high energy radiation known as Van Allen Region.

This region is extended from 500 miles above the earth at equator to an altitude of about 40,000 miles. Cosmic rays in the range of 0.0004 nm to the radio waves of 300 m is depicted in the form of electromagnetic spectrum. All the forms of this natural radiation to which we are exposed are called background radiation. With, these natural radiations we are also subjected to the radiations produced by artificial disintegration of heavy radionuclides. Large amounts of radiation are produced by different fission-fusion reactions and many other sources.

These man-made radiations also add to the natural radiation pollution. The major sources of man-made radiation are medical Z-rays, radioisotopes, nuclear tests, radioactive fallouts, nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants, nuclear installations, radioactive processing, use of radioactive material in industrial, medical and research work etc. and radiation pollution from electric fields.

In this way, we see that radiation pollution is enhanced to a great extent due to human activities. We all are responsible for this most hazardous pollution as other pollutions effect our land, air and water and come to us through food chain but this deadly radiation pollution directly affects the man at somatic and genetic level both, because radioactive substances are the most toxic substances for example radium is 25000 times more lethal than arsenic.

Ionising radiations bring about more dangerous effects than other toxicants. Their effect may continue in subsequent generations too. As the effects of radiation pollution are not apparent like other pollutions so it is often termed as silent killer.

As the exposure to radioactive materials is severe and bears grave consequences, so radioactive pollution prevention is mandatory. It is only through prevention methods that safety can be assured. It is, in fact, our duty to see that our life support system and environment are not degraded by our activities and we hand over a clean and healthy environment free of all types of pollution to our future generations.

It could be possible only with the practical application of our ecological knowledge, which helps us to have a holistic view towards our environment and environmental problems. If human race has to survive each individual should contribute in creating positive environment.

Through appropriate safeguards and control measures we can prevent or at least mitigate the adverse environmental impacts. It is only through prevention that safety can be assured. The regulations and other standards are put in place to make sure that there is no way for radioactive matter to be released.

FAQs on Paragraph on Radioactive Pollution in English

Few Lines on Importance of Radioactive Pollution??

Radioactive contamination, also called radiological pollution, is the deposition of, or presence of radioactive substances on surfaces or within solids, liquids, or gases (including the human body), where their presence is unintended or undesirable (from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) definition).

Such contamination presents a hazard because the radioactive decay of the contaminants, produces ionizing radiation (namely alpha, beta, gamma rays and free neutrons). The degree of hazard is determined by the concentration of the contaminants, the energy of the radiation being emitted, the type of radiation, and the proximity of the contamination to organs of the body. It is important to be clear that the contamination gives rise to the radiation hazard, and the terms "radiation" and "contamination" are not interchangeable.

The sources of radioactive pollution can be classified into two groups: natural and man-made. Following an atmospheric nuclear weapon discharge or a nuclear reactor containment breach, the air, soil, people, plants, and animals in the vicinity will become contaminated by nuclear fuel and fission products. A spilled vial of radioactive material like uranyl nitrate may contaminate the floor and any rags used to wipe up the spill. Cases of widespread radioactive contamination include the Bikini Atoll, the Rocky Flats Plant in Colorado, the area near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the area near the Chernobyl disaster, and the area near the Mayak disaster.
