Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, I want to talk about a brave soul who will forever be remembered in the annals of Indian history as a true hero, Captain Vikram Batra.

Captain Vikram Batra was a young officer of the Indian Army, who was born on 9th September 1974 in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. He joined the Indian Military Academy in 1996, and it didn't take long for him to prove his mettle as an exceptional soldier.

During the Kargil War in 1999, Captain Batra was posted with the 13 JAK Rifles, and it was here that he displayed unparalleled courage and bravery that won him the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honour. His valour and sacrifice in the line of duty continue to inspire generations of young Indians even today.

Captain Batra's bravery and leadership came to the forefront during the capture of Point 5140, which is now famously known as the 'Batra Top'. During the operation, he led his troops from the front and personally killed several enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. It was during this battle that he famously said, "Yeh dil maange more," which became a rallying cry for the Indian Army.

Later, during the capture of Point 4875, Captain Batra again displayed incredible bravery by leading a charge against the enemy, even though he was severely injured. Despite being hit by enemy fire, he continued to lead his troops and successfully captured the objective.

However, Captain Batra's heroism came at a heavy price. On 7th July 1999, while leading a mission to rescue a fellow officer who was injured, he was hit by enemy fire and succumbed to his injuries. He was just 24 years old.
