'A Hero' by famous English novelist R.K. Narayan. This is a quote from his familiar novel 'Swami and his friends' In this novel Swami was a boy aged 11-12 years. He was such a simple, innocent, non-courageous boy born in a middle-class South Indian family. His family members were his father, mother, grandmother and small children. His father was the most disciplined and authoritative.

Her mother and grandmother were more caring, protective, and she was obedient to her father. In this quote Once his father was reading a newspaper and he called Swami and narrated the incident of the tiger. The brave boy faced the tiger and kept flying on the tree till some people came and killed the tiger. Swami's father asked Swami's opinion about the incident. Swami said that facing the tiger alone means that he may be a strong adult man, not a boy at all. The father said that courage is more important, strength and age are not so important. Swami did not agree, so the father challenged him to show courage by sleeping alone in his office. Poor Swami got scared and wanted to change the subject, he started talking about the cricket club.

But his father was so determined and ordered him to sleep alone in his office-room. To avoid this, Swami gave many excuses and he was not ready to sleep alone. The father said that it is a shame to sleep near the grandmother, or that the mother is like a child, although she has grown up and is studying in another form. While talking, the father looked at his wife, but she was not ready to bear the abuses that spoiled his son. So he said that his grandmother was spoiling him. Swami's father remained silent. At that time Swami quietly went towards his bed. Grandma called him and asked why he didn't want to hear a story that day as usual. Swami wanted to escape from his father, so he threw himself on his bed and pulled the blanket over his face. Seeing this, Nani said not to cover her face and asked if she was really sleeping a lot. Swami got angry with his grandmother and started pretending to be sleeping. The father came and asked him to pick him up.

Dadi recommends Swami and asks Swami's father why he bothered him. The mother also supported her son and advised him to sleep in the hall. But the father did not listen to him. Swami was unwilling to sleep in the office room, saying it was very dusty and there might be scorpions behind the law books. But the father did not agree and ordered him to sleep in the office-room, otherwise he would make him a laughing stock in the school, he was afraid of the dark so he asked permission to keep the lamp burning. For this also father; did not agree as he wanted Swami to learn not to be afraid of the dark.

Finally, Swami requested to leave the office-room door open. To this the father agreed. There was no way to escape from the father. So Swami went to the office-room. When he was in the room he hated the news about the tiger in the newspaper and wished that the tiger had not spared the boy. As the night progressed and the silence deepened, his heart beat faster. She remembered the horror devil and ghost stories she had heard. He was too afraid to be alone in the room. He could hear all kinds of sounds like the ticking of the clock, the rustle of trees, the sound of snoring, etc. in the stillness of the night.

Every moment the devil would come in his thoughts and take him away. He was full of fear, he didn't know what to do. He got up and spread his bed under the bench and leaned over there. He closed his eyes tightly and fell asleep. He had nightmares in his sleep. The nightmare continued……… a tiger was following him, the tiger was on his back, the tiger was afraid that he would catch it. He groaned in despair.

After a few tries, he opened his eyes, he touched the wooden leg of the bench assuming that the grandmother was by his side. He sweated in fear. At that time Swami saw something moving, he felt that his end had come, why should he wait? As he came near, he hugged her and bit her like a mortal weapon with all her might. The man (thief) screamed in pain and fell between the furniture.

Hearing the cry of a man, the father, the cook and a servant came. All three caught the thief. The thief was the most notorious house breaker in the district and was a challenge for the police. The next day Swami was congratulated. His classmates looked at him with great respect. His teachers and headmaster were also proud of him. Swami became a hero in a single night and everyone became happy. At night the father asked where is Swami? Because that mother replied that he had already slept in his usual place. Mother also continued her talk and told that let her sleep wherever she wants, there is no need to risk her life again. The father murmured that there was no fault on his part if Swami went bad. Swami listens to his parents' entire conversation and is relieved that his father is finally leaving him.
