After much effort and negotiation with the narrator, Oldman agreed to sell his property. Took months. The old man had come to the office on the day of sale. He was wearing an old, green faded coat. Looking at the old man, the author recalls Senator Catron (Thomas Benton Catron, a senator from New Mexico, 1912–1917). The mountain people had great power to control. The old man's coat was similar to that of Prince Albert's, meaning the old man was wearing his old, long, double-breasted coat. He was wearing old and Tom's gloves and his fingers can be seen through them. He was carrying a cane, it was only the skeleton of a worn umbrella. Behind her was a relative boy of hers. Finally he signed the deed and took the money and went out as usual. A month later the buyers renovated the house and the garden, and they moved in to live there, but the children of the village were occupying their property. They used to come daily, play under the trees and take flowers by making small enclosures. Buyers warned them but they simply laughed and spoke good-naturedly in Spanish. This complaint came back to the office.

To solve the problem, the storyteller sent a messenger to summon Don Anselmo. It took a week to arrange the meeting. When the old man came, the problem was discussed. The storyteller asked the old man that he was the most respected person in the village, why could he not stop the children from doing this. Buyers can enjoy their new home in peace. After listening, Don Anselmo replied that he sold his property to them because they were good people, but that he did not sell them the trees in the orchard. The storyteller tried to explain that generally if the land/orchard is sold, then the possession of the trees in that place is also with the buyers.

The old man agreed and said that he is the oldest man in the village, all his relatives in the village and all the children are nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Whenever a child is born in Rio en Medio, he planted a tree for that child. The trees of that garden do not belong to the children of the village. So he had no right to sell and he did not sell it. Legally the buyers were the owners of the trees but the old man was so generous and refused to accept his fate. Later, buyers personally bought all the trees from Don Anselmo's descendants. It took most of the following winter.
