An old woman grabs a tourist's sleeve and tags along. She wants a 'paisa paise coin'. For this she offers to show him the 'Horseshoe Temple'. This refers to a legend centered around a horseshoe-shaped depression in a rock about Khandoba, the presiding deity of Jejuri, who climbed on his horse from that rock as he took his wife with him. It is a legend that the true believer believes and the skeptic doubts.

 

The tourist walks away because he has already seen the temple. The old woman 'tightens her grip' and the 'drunken' go hand in hand - don't give up so easily. He is unshakable. She clings to him like a 'thunder' - a prickly seed pod that clings to clothing.

 

Irritated by this persistence, the tourist decides to 'face him' with an 'air of finality' - he decides not to bow down to him and thus wants to end the 'skit'. He assumes that his nonsensical reaction will put him off. But the old woman's fact question - what else can the 'old woman' do to survive on these 'wretched hills' - strikes the narrator like a thunderbolt.

The harsh reality that the narrator encounters allows him to see her up close. When he turns and sees her face, he is shocked. There are two deeply sunken eyes that look like bullet holes. His skin is wrinkled and cracks appear around his eyes and extend beyond his skin. He feels that everything is falling apart. Everything is torn apart.

The cracks spread beyond his skin to the hills and sky. Catastrophe happens. Mountains break, temples break and the sky shatters like a sheet of glass. But the old woman stands there as a symbol of all-round decline. The narrator feels embarrassed. He is reduced to small changes in the heartland.

In the moment of realization, the narrator/tourist finds himself low in his self-esteem. Her awakening to the 'real' world makes her feel 'small' - as insignificant as a small coin in her hand.
