उन्होंने अपनी माँ को केवल चार या पाँच बार देखा था जब वह मिस्टर स्टीवर्ट के स्थान से बारह मील चलने के बाद उनसे मिलीं, जहाँ उन्होंने फील्ड हैंड के रूप में काम किया था। अगर उसे गुलाम मालिक के कोड़े मारने की सजा से बचना होता तो उसे सूर्योदय से पहले मैदान में वापस आना पड़ता। इससे माँ और बच्चे के पास संचार के लिए बहुत कम समय और गुंजाइश बची। इसका दुखद परिणाम यह है कि जब वह लगभग सात वर्ष के थे, जब उन्होंने उसे खो दिया, तो उन्होंने दुख की सामान्य भावनाओं को महसूस नहीं किया।

Frederick Douglass is an autobiographical piece about the life of an American slave. This piece brings to us a horrifying description of the mistreatment of slaves by their white masters. The author begins with a reference to his birth in Tukaho. Ironically, he is unable to tell when exactly he was born. He says that this ambiguity about age was great for all the slaves because their master hid this information from them. The author, who is unhappy with his ignorance about his date of birth, states that according to what his master had said about his age ten years ago, he must be twenty-seven or twenty-eight.

 

The speaker's ignorance is not limited to his age alone. He does not know who his father is, although there is common speculation that his father is a white man. He learns that his mother was a black woman named Harriet Bailey, from whom he was separated as a child. He says it was a common custom in that part of Maryland to separate children from their mothers, thereby disrupting the natural bond between mother and child.

 

He had only seen his mother four or five times when she met him after walking twelve miles to Mr. Stewart's place, where he had worked as a field hand. If he had to escape the punishment of the slave master's whipping, he would have to return to the field before sunrise. This left little time and scope for communication between mother and child. The sad consequence of this is that when he lost her when he was about seven years old, he did not feel the usual feelings of sadness.

The sudden death of the mother put an end to whatever opportunity the writer had given to know who his father was. He could not be quite sure whether his slave master was also his father, although there were rumours to this effect. But, the possibility of the slave owner being the father was no relief to the children as such children were under constant scrutiny from the wives of such slave masters. Such slave owners went to the extent of selling these children to meat traders to please their white wives. If they didn't, they would either have to watch their black children whipping or watch their white sons whip their black brothers. Any sign of disapproval by a white man at the bloody acts of white sons only made matters worse for both the slave owner and his black children.

 

The author shares his experiences with his readers under the name of one of his two mentors - Captain Anthony. If Swami himself was cruel, his supervisor-Mr. Plummer- was even more brutal. The author presents to the readers a bloody account in which the master beats one of his aunts with a cow's skin until he is too tired to whip her. Mr. Plummer, on his part, not only walked around with the cow's skin, but also took a heavy stick and horribly chopped off the women's heads.

Despite all these difficulties, the author had hope to come out of slavery and thanks God for giving him this hope and enthusiasm as a youth.
