The Volga poem 'The Farmer's Wife' begins with the lamentation of the farmer's wife, who mourns the death of her husband. However, it is clear in her lament that more than mourning the death of her husband, she expresses her grief at the hopelessness of the situation. Unable to face the creditors, her husband has committed suicide. However, their act is not considered irresponsible. In fact, people can even think of his act as a virtuous act of a self-respecting man who did not want to bow his head and spread his arm. But the woman says he has left her behind by committing suicide, bowing his head and extending his hand as he has to continue living for at least his four children.

The woman, ironically, has no problem with bowing her head and spreading her hands as she has always done so. She has always done this because women are always pushed to a lower level. But she does not understand that her husband, who had always asserted his authority over her, being only a man, could drink poison and break free from worldly shackles in a cowardly manner. The woman questioned his act saying that his irresponsible act had poisoned his very existence. She explains that while Gina was worse than death, embracing death was a selfish and even cruel act on the part of the man as he did not think of the family he had left behind.

The woman is shocked that the man, who could have kicked and threatened her by claiming superiority over her, could have given her the ultimate death blow by committing suicide. At this point, the woman compares the hardship faced by the family over the years and the loss of the cotton crop that year. She says that the pain she had was there for a long time, but she had endured it. The problem of the cotton crop is, as they say, 'Kal ki baat hai'. The two problems are combined to show that men give in to pressure more easily than women. Men are also self-centred and when they resort to escapism, they do not think about what will happen to their family. They don't even care about their children's future. In such a situation, it becomes a double danger for the woman.

On one hand she has to deal with the death of her husband and on the other hand she has to worry about the future of her children. Here too the poet draws an analogy between the natural harvest and the children. The woman says that her husband committed suicide due to crop failure. Had she done the same, her children would not have a bright future. She further says that she is not ready to let the crop of her womb get destroyed. She cannot leave her children as helpless as a cotton pod eating a worm in the air. The woman rightly says that meeting the end ends in a moment. This is not a long struggle. But the struggle in life, to maintain and continue life, is a long struggle, full of dangers. It takes a brave heart for this.

Only one with a firm heart would analyze a difficult situation with questions like, 'What about?' or 'Why is this?' When a person asks, 'What about it?', he probably wonders what will be the final result of all conflict. When he asks, 'Why is that?', he certainly has a sense of self-pity. Yet he should never lose his reasoning ability and determination to fight his misfortune. Otherwise his children will become orphans. So the farmer's wife claims that she will continue to live to teach her children how to live.

She wants to instill in her children the fighting spirit which her husband was lacking. That's why she says that she will live to teach her children to fight with clenched fists not only for the basic need of food but also for more important things, which can be no less than a fight to achieve. For this she resolves to embrace life, not death, although life will present a long and painful struggle.

Thus this poem is a tribute to the fearless spirit of women and an appeal to the weak hearted not to lose hope.
