AJ 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' by Cronin is about the selfless lives of two brothers – thirteen-year-old Nicola and twelve-year-old Jacopo. The speaker, who is accompanied by his partner, comes to them selling strawberries on the outskirts of Verona. Luigi, the driver, cautions them not to buy fruit from the shabby boys as better fruits will be available in Verona. However, the narrator and his partner feel strangely attracted to boys who, despite their brown skin and matted hair, have serious eyes.

 

The next morning, the narrator and his companions find the boys in shining shoes in the public square. The narrator learns that the boys perform a number of tasks, including showing Juliet's grave and other places of interest to visitors through the city. The narrator also takes this service from the boys and is again attracted by their dignified behaviour. They feel that they have seriousness that is far beyond their age. In the coming weeks, the boys prove to be of great use to the narrator. They find out for him American cigarettes, seats for operas and restaurants serving good pasta.

 

The narrator discovers that they work very hard, accepting any and every job, including selling newspapers, conducting tourists around town, and doing other odd jobs for them. The narrator finds them awake until midnight to sell the last bundle of newspapers when the last bus from Padua arrives. When the narrator tries to figure out why they try so hard, Nicola remains aloof. But, the next day the narrator asks him again why he works so hard, eating only black bread and figs. He wants to know if they are saving money to immigrate to the US. Nikola only states that he has other plans, but does not reveal what those plans are.

When the narrator wants to know if he can do anything for the boys before leaving the place, Jacopo demands a drive to Poleta, a countryside 30 km from Verona, saying that Every Sunday he used to go by bicycle on rent. The narrator offers to take them down himself because he had already discharged his driver. Nicola, however, is furious that her brother has enlisted the help of the narrator. Upon reaching Poleta, the boys go to a large red-roofed villa, telling the narrator that it will take them no more than an hour to return. After a gap of a few minutes, the narrator visits the villa only to learn that it is a hospital.

There a trained nurse escorts him to a chamber and, through a glass partition, the narrator sees the boys in conversation with their sister, a twenty-year-old girl named Lucia. The narrator along with his sister does not want to interfere with the boys' privacy and so leaves without speaking to them. From the nurse, he learns that the boys had lost their father, a widower and a famous singer, early in the war, and that their house was destroyed by a bomb soon after. They lived in a shelter that they had built from rubble with their own hands and faced many hardships, including cold weather. They hated the German Elite Guard which had ruled Verona for three years and acted as secret agents against the Germans in support of the resistance movement. His small size, young age and knowledge of the surroundings helped him in the dangerous task of carrying letters in his shoes about the movements of German soldiers.

When the war ended, they returned to their sister, an aspiring singer, only to find that she was suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. But, he didn't give up. They put her in an expensive hospital and went back to the hospital every week to pay for twelve months. She had shown good progress and the nurse says that she may one day fully recover and start singing again.
