The title of the play 'Watchmen of the Lake' goes to R.K. Narayan refers to a watchman who was instrumental in the existence of the lake. A one-act play consisting of five scenes, we are exposed to the saga of Mara, who, against stiff opposition, made sure to bring the lake into existence, and sacrificed himself to ensure that the lake was the king's entire capital. She will not shed her edges to destroy. who built the pond.

In scene one, we see road builders working under the instructions of the village head. The head of the village, who is abusive to all the laborers, reminds them time and again that the road should be ready a day before the arrival of the king. When he sees some workers laughing, he asks the reason. He is furious to learn that Mara is hiding behind a rock, the reason for their laughter. The chief ordered his workers to go to capture Mara. When Mara is brought to him, he scolds Mara for distracting the workers and reminds her that he repeatedly told Mara to stay away from the workers for the present and when he left that road. The king passed.

When Mara shows his disobedience, he orders one of his workers – Bhima, who is as huge as a giant, to tie up Mara and lock her in a dungeon. Even when Mara tells him that he wants to inform the king about a dream in which he saw the goddess, the chief does not obey. The chief warns Bhima not to listen to Mara.

In scene two, we see Raja passing through that path. But suddenly Mara jumps down from a tree and puts before the king the vision of the goddess of his dreams and her words. Mara says that the plate on which the king stood was a sacred place as Hanuman came there in search of Sanjivani to revive Lakshmana, who was mortally wounded in battle. From where Sanjeevani developed, the stream that emanated from there was the Veda and it was a game for the Goddess. The goddess kept him in shelter in the summer and at other times carried him out of the king's kingdom. So, even in summer, the king's subjects could access the water if a bank was built for him. The king is impressed by the idea that Mara has had a vision of the goddess and asks Mara to follow her into the kingdom.

In scene three, we see that a huge pond has already been built for the Veda River, and Mara faithfully looks after the lake. He is wary of those who come there for fishing, but is ready to give water for the use of all subjects, according to the law laid down by the king. He makes sure that no one is harmed in the lake, not even the tiger who comes there to quench his thirst. We see that Mara maintains the lake with the help of his son Ganga. When the scene ends, we see Mara worried about the rising water level in the lake.

In scene four, we see Mara in the palace asking for permission to speak to the king late at night. Mara, who is drenched in water and mud is scattered around her, tells the king that the goddess had appeared again in his dream and warned him that the Vedas were flowing by the lake. When Mara reminded her that the bank was created on her behest, she still did not agree. Mara says that Devi seemed to be in a destructive mood. Mara tells the king that if the water overflows, the whole kingdom will be destroyed.

Even as the king agrees to inform his subjects of the impending deluge and destruction, Mara tells him that there is a way to save the kingdom. He says that the goddess had promised that he would not overflow until Mara returned and that the king could ensure that Mara did not return after killing her. Thus we see that Mara sacrifices himself for the welfare of the king and his subjects. His only request is that his son should be made the next watchman and after his son his grandson and great-grandson should be made the watchman of the lake.

In scene five, we see that Ganga is the watchman of the lake and he tells his son when he took over his father's duty. From his narration we learn that the king had come to personally tell Ganga that her father was more. The king also asked Ganga to immediately start performing her father's duty. The king also built a temple with two figures - one of the guardian goddess on the top pedestal and one of Mara just below it. The puja was to be performed on every Tuesday and Friday by the order of the king. Ganga says that since then a large number of people came from far and wide for worship. Thus, we see that Mara, who was called mad by the village head, was worshiped by thousands of villagers.
