'A Sunny Morning' is a short, one-act play by two famous Spanish playwrights Serafin and Joaquín lvarez Quintero. It is a romantic comedy that tells the story of Don Gonzalo and Donna Laura, who were in love in their youth but were forced to part ways in life.

On a sunny autumn morning in a quiet corner of a park in Madrid, Donna Laura, a beautiful, white-haired woman of about seventy years, refined in appearance, is feeding pigeons in the park. Don Gonzalo, a gentleman in his seventies, serious and impatient, enters. His servant Petra, Donna Laura's maidservant, and Juanito come and go.

The conversation begins sarcastically between two seventy-year-olds, each accused of encroaching on their personal space. Don Gonzalo complains that the priests have taken his benches and says that Donna Laura is an "old lady! She should be weaving and counting pearls at home." She finds him "a bad-tempered old man"! He resigns himself to "sit on the bench with the old lady".

 

A pinch of sniffing helps clear their heads, and they find something in common with sneezes alternating three or three times. "Snuff has made peace between us," Donna Laura told the audience.

They start joking back and forth in a more friendly way. Then Don Gonzalo reads aloud from a book of poems. As they chat, Gonzalo says that she is from Valencia and, to her surprise, Laura reveals that she is from Maricella where she lived in a villa. Gonzalo is shocked by the revelation and says that he knows a woman named Laura Llorente who lived in a villa there, who was probably the most beautiful he had ever seen. Laura and Gonzalo both make each other realize that they are ex-lovers. But they pretend not to reveal their identity.

 

In her youth, Donna Laura was known in her locality as 'The Silver Maiden'. She was fair as Lily, with jet black hair and black eyes. She was like a dream. She was in love with the heroic lover Gonzalo. Every morning he rode on a horse through the rose garden and tossed a bouquet of flowers on her balcony which she caught and on his way back in the afternoon she threw the flowers back to him. But Laura's parents wanted her to marry a businessman she disliked. One day a quarrel broke out between Gonzalo and the merchant, lover. After the duel the young man fled from his hometown to Seville and then to Madrid, fearing the consequences of a duel with a highly respected person in that area. Even though he tried to communicate with Laura through letters, all attempts failed.

Now Laura and Gonzalo make up their own death stories. Old Gonzalo says that he is the cousin of the young man. According to him, young Gonzalo had to leave his position because he was involved in a fight with a businessman, Laura's boyfriend. He then joined the army and went to Africa where he met a glorious death. Old Laura says that she knows a woman named Laura, known as The Silver Maiden, and that she was his friend from an early age. She also lies that she knows the tragic story of her love affair with a heroic young man named Gonzalo. The old lady reveals that the young and beautiful Laura committed suicide after not finding her lover.

But, in fact, after three months Gonzalo fled to Paris with a ballet dancer, and Laura, on the other hand, got married two years later. Both realize that they are lying but pretend to be unaware. When the play ends, they agree to meet again at the park, yet not admitting what the truth is they both know.
