Dr. Siddalingaiah is Professor of Kannada at Bangalore University. He is a prominent Kannada poet. He pioneered the voice of Dalits in 1975. One of the most trending works on Dalit literature in Kannada is 'Holemadiyagana Hadu' (1975), a collection of poems by Siddalingaiah. His autobiography. 'Uru Keri' has been translated into English. Many of his poems have been translated into various Indian and other languages.

Dr. Sumathedra Nadig is a prominent modern poet. His 'Dampatya Gita' has been translated into English, Hindi, Bengali and other Indian languages.

In the poet 'My People' Dr. Siddalingaiah, the poet throws light on the 'Dalits' of his people. Dalits are socially marginalized by other people in Indian society. In the past, Dalits never got the opportunity to be educated and this led to their oppression.

They were forced to work as landless labourers, were paid less and lived a life of poverty. They have faced unknown miseries. In the poem, the poet says that his people carry stones for buildings.

They are forced to work hard. If they are not quick enough to perform the task assigned to them they are kicked until they faint. Even though they work hard day and night, they are paid a small amount. Many of them cannot eat two meals a day and therefore die of hunger or malnutrition.

The poet's people, going deep into the gold mines, risking their lives and limbs to dig for gold, even though they help produce the most valuable metal on earth, do not get a day's worth of food. because they are paid a nominal wage. By their hard work.

These people weave cloth to protect the dignity of all people, but they themselves become naked because they cannot buy clothes that they weave by themselves. These people plow the fields of wealthy landowners.

They sow seeds and reap the harvest by working hard in the hot sun. They are burnt (burned) in the sun – many of these people become slaves of bonded labor because they have borrowed money from landlords.

The money that the landlords earn by working as laborers in the fields is deducted to pay off the debt, so they go home empty handed. They breathe deeply in misery and live a life of misery and poverty.

These people build shops and build buildings. They are caught in a huge debt trap. Despite poverty and starvation, they do not shout for help in difficult situation. They suppress their cries for help because they know that no one will help them, that no one will come to their aid and relieve them of their misery.

They pay huge interest for the loans they borrow (they pay the interest out of their nose). Politicians use them as their vote bank. He gives fiery speeches about his rise and gets elected. In the greed of his tempting promises these men choose him, only to be dismayed by politicians - 'they turn to ashes in the fire of fiery speeches.

Men often present themselves as God-loving people but these men (gurus and maths-heads) lead a life of luxury. The people of the poet make footwear for these sadhus.

If the poet's people fall at the feet of others, that is, if they plead for help, they are kicked. But they are oblivious to the ways of other men who assure them of their upliftment. They dedicate themselves to these men and listen to what they have to say.

But they never get any help, they are left to take care of themselves. They live in the air. They live a life of poverty and misery, these people, the poet's people.
