The text 'India through the eyes of a foreigner' by British-Indian radio journalist Mark Tully is a synopsis. Mark Tully was with the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) until his resignation in 1994. In this brief account of his experiences in India, Mark Tully tells us why he loves India and Indians so much. He gives vividly as he imagines the natural beauty of India and the beauty and diversity of India's social religions and cultural activities.
After Mark Tully came to India he soon realized that joining India was not difficult. From the day he arrived, he was surrounded by friends who introduced him to the staff of All India Radio, Press Club and his neighbours. He says many are still good friends. These friends encouraged him to join India. When someone asked him why he didn't go back to England, he replied that it was because of his dear friends.
He tells us that this was not the only reason he decided to stay in India. The truth was that he was attracted to the natural beauty of India. He describes how he discovered the beauty of India. One week we were camping in the Great Himalayan National Park watching the snow-capped mountains glow in the sunset and the next week he would be in Kerala, sitting in his swimming tanks watching the sunset over the Arabian Sea.
He is indifferent to the smell of the seasons in India. He distinguishes the dry scent of Delhi's early summer, when blue jacarandas, scarlet gulmohar flowers overshadow the sweet smell of the Queen of the Night and the freshness of pine trees at the foothills of the Himalayas. He is influenced by variety of folk songs and Indian classical music. They feel that classical ragas begin with tapasya (simplicity) and end in ecstasy.
Mark Tully marvels at the great epics and love poetry of India. He tells us that one wall of his flat is covered with art from the dominant tribe of central India. He is intimidated by the colorful festivals of India and the priest, he is not lavishly dressed like the preachers of the church, performs evening pujas in temples. He is impressed by the dignity of the courtyards of the mosques where Muslims offer prayers. He tells us that he will never know whether someone will be disappointed seeing the Taj Mahal or the forts of Rajasthan. He also likes to have a vegetarian thali in Indian food like parathas.
He believes that all these things forced him to live in India. He is apologetic and accepts that he is not a poet to give a suitable description of India. What it means for India, only a poet can tell. Most foreigners like him believe that India and Indians are unique. He is grateful to India and Indians for being accepted as one of his own.
