Mrinalini Sambhai's story 'Gurudakshina of Uttanka' exemplifies the courage and dedication of a Uttanka boy to fulfill the wish of his gum's wife. Once in India, a boy named Uttanka was being taught in the forest ashram of the wise. After many years his master taught him everything he knew. One day he went to his Guru and requested him to choose a gift which he could give as Guru Dakshina.

His' boss said he wanted but instructed him to ask his wife if she wanted anything. Gum's wife told him that she had long wanted to wear the queen's earring. He asked her to bring the earrings. So that he can wear them on the day of the festival. Although Uttanka was disappointed, he set out to get the earrings from the king.

On his way through the forest, he met a man riding a huge bull. The man offered Uttanka a cup full of some liquid and asked him to drink it saying that it would help him on the way. Uttanka reached the king's palace and went straight to the king and told him about his gum-wives that I wish the king had asked him to seek the queen's help. The queen willingly gave him the earrings but warned him that the Serpent King also loved jewelry and might try to steal them. Uttanka thanked her and left for home.

That evening, when he was tired and exhausted, he leaned on a tree for some rest. He kept earrings with him. Suddenly, a man wearing rags snatched the rings and fled into the forest. Uttanka ran after him but the man turned into a snake and fell into a hole in the ground. Uttanka was distressed, and could not understand how he could go inside the hole. At the same time an old mail arrived and assured him of help. As soon as the man said this, there was a great thunderstorm and the earth shook.

Uttanka saw a big hole near her. He went into the kingdom of the serpent inside the hole. There he saw a man on a horse and bowed respectfully to him and asked him to grant him a grace, which would put the Serpent King in the power of Uttanka. The man asked Uttanka to hit his horse. When Uttanka attacked the horse, flames came out from every hair of the horse's body and the houses of the serpents were burnt. Then the serpents begged Uttanka to save them. Uttanka told them that if the snake king returned the earrings, he would save them. The serpents then urged their king to return the jewels. Later on Uttanka returned to the ashram in time to pay his guru's wife an income. She was delighted and blessed him for his courage.

When Uttanka told his guru about his adventure, his guru told him that the liquid he drank was nectar, which would give him eternal youth. The one who gave it was the god of rain and the horse was the god of fire. He blessed his disciple and sent him to live in the world.
