आनंदीबाई का जन्म 31 मार्च, 1865 को कल्याण, मुंबई में हुआ था। उनके बचपन का नाम यमुना जोशी था। जब वह नौ साल की थी, तब उसकी शादी हो गई थी और उसका नाम बदलकर आनंदी कर दिया गया था। उनके पति गोपाल राव एक व्यापक सोच वाले व्यक्ति थे। उन्होंने विधवा पुनर्विवाह और महिला शिक्षा का पुरजोर समर्थन किया। चूंकि आनंदी ठीक से शिक्षित नहीं थी, इसलिए उन्होंने उसे पढ़ाना शुरू कर दिया। पहले तो उसने उसे मिशनरी स्कूलों में दाखिला दिलाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन बात नहीं बनी।

जब आनंदी ने तेजी से प्रगति की, तो गोपाल राव ने उसे आगे पढ़ने के लिए राजी किया। तब भारत में कोई महिला डॉक्टर नहीं थी। इसके अलावा, आनंदीबाई ने चौदह वर्ष की उम्र में अपने छोटे बेटे को खो दिया था। इसलिए, उसने डॉक्टर बनने का फैसला किया। गोपाल राव ने उन्हें एक अमेरिकी विश्वविद्यालय में सीट दिलाने की बहुत कोशिश की।

मतभेदों के बावजूद श्रीमती कारपेंटर ने अपनी बेटी की तरह आनंदीबाई की देखभाल की। आनंदीबाई ने फिलाडेल्फिया में महिला कॉलेज में प्रवेश लिया। अधीक्षक और सचिव उस पर बहुत दयालु थे, जब उन्हें पता चला कि वह भारत से गरीबी और अपने लोगों के विरोध का अध्ययन करने के लिए आई थी। उन्होंने उसे तीन साल के लिए छह सौ डॉलर की छात्रवृत्ति की पेशकश की।

वह जिस कॉलेज के कमरे में रहती थी वह अच्छा नहीं था। इसमें उचित चिमनी और वेंटिलेशन नहीं था। आग जलाने पर काफी धुंआ निकलता था। आनंदीबाई ने दूसरी जगह शिफ्ट करने की कोशिश की, लेकिन, लोगों ने एक भूरी हिंदू लड़की को एक कमरा किराए पर देने से इनकार कर दिया। इसलिए मजबूर होकर उसे उसी कमरे में रहना पड़ा। ठंड और धुएं ने उनके स्वास्थ्य को बहुत बुरी तरह प्रभावित किया। वह उच्च तापमान और पुरानी खांसी से पीड़ित थी। किसी तरह वह अपनी शिक्षा पूरी करने में सफल रही और मेडिकल की डिग्री हासिल की। उन्हें भारत की पहली महिला डॉक्टर के रूप में सम्मानित किया गया था।

यह उसके जीवन के सबसे पुरस्कृत क्षणों में से एक था। जैसे-जैसे दिन चढ़ता गया, उसकी तबीयत बिगड़ती गई। गोपाल राव ने उन्हें फिलाडेल्फिया के महिला अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया। वहाँ उन्होंने निदान किया कि उसे तपेदिक है। डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें भारत लौटने की सलाह दी। घर वापस जाने की उनकी यात्रा ने उनके स्वास्थ्य को और नुकसान पहुंचाया। जहाज पर मौजूद डॉक्टरों ने एक भूरी महिला का इलाज करने से इनकार कर दिया।

भारत पहुंचने के बाद, वह एक आयुर्वेदिक विशेषज्ञ से इलाज कराने के लिए पुणे में अपने चचेरे भाई के साथ रही। लेकिन, उसने उसका इलाज करने से भी इनकार कर दिया क्योंकि वह भारतीय समाज के रीति-रिवाजों और परंपराओं के खिलाफ गई थी। आनंदीबाई निराश थी क्योंकि उसकी सारी उपलब्धियाँ बेकार हो गई थीं। उन्होंने 26 फरवरी, 1887 को अंतिम सांस ली।

Anandibai was born on March 31, 1865 in Kalyan, Mumbai. His childhood name was Yamuna Joshi. She got married when she was nine years old and her name was changed to Anandi. Her husband Gopal Rao was a broad-minded person. He strongly supported widow remarriage and women's education. Since Anandi was not properly educated, he started teaching her. At first he tried to enroll her in missionary schools, but it didn't work out.

When Anandi made rapid progress, Gopal Rao persuaded her to study further. There was no female doctor in India then. In addition, Anandibai lost her younger son at the age of fourteen. Therefore, he decided to become a doctor. Gopal Rao tried hard to get him a seat in an American university.

Mrs. Carpenter of Rosale, New Jersey, learned of Anandibai's story by chance. He offered to host her in the United States because Gopal Rao could not find a job in America, despite protests and criticism, Anandi went to America alone. She arrived in America in June 1883 and lived in the Carpenter's house.

Anandibai found many things strange in America. Their dress, lifestyle and food habits were quite different. She was surprised when she found that they do not bathe every day. Similarly, the carpenter found Anandibai's dress, her vegetarian diet, her customs very strange.

Despite differences, Mrs. Carpenter looked after Anandibai like her own daughter. Anandibai joined the Women's College in Philadelphia. The superintendent and secretary were very kind to her when they learned that she had come from India to study poverty and the opposition of her people. They offered him a scholarship of six hundred dollars for three years.

The college room in which she lived was not good. It did not have proper chimney and ventilation. There was a lot of smoke when the fire was lit. Anandibai tried to shift to another place, but people refused to rent a room to a brown Hindu girl. So he was forced to stay in the same room. The cold and smoke affected his health very badly. She was suffering from high temperature and chronic cough. Somehow she managed to complete her education and got a medical degree. She was honored as the first woman doctor of India.

It was one of the most rewarding moments of his life. As the day progressed, his health deteriorated. Gopal Rao admitted her to the Women's Hospital in Philadelphia. There he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Doctors advised him to return to India. His journey back home further damaged his health. Doctors on the ship refused to treat a brown woman.

After reaching India, she stayed with her cousin in Pune to get treatment from an Ayurvedic specialist. But, he also refused to treat her as she went against the customs and traditions of the Indian society. Anandibai was disappointed as all her achievements were in vain. He breathed his last on February 26, 1887.

People across India mourned his death. His ashes were sent to Mrs. Carpenter, who placed them in her family's cemetery. Anandibai's life and achievements have inspired many young women. He has given us confidence in our abilities, and that we can achieve our goals in spite of adversity and circumstances. The Maharashtra government has established a fellowship in honor of young women working on women's health.
