कवि इस मानवीय व्यवहार को एक काल्पनिक प्रसंग का वर्णन करते हुए चित्रित करता है जिसमें वह कल्पना करती है कि उसका पांच वर्षीय बच्चा बरसात की रात के बाद खिड़की पर एक घोंघा को मूर्खतापूर्ण तरीके से ऊपर चढ़ते हुए देखता है। माँ (कवि) बच्चे के कमरे में जाती है और समझाती है कि इसे वहाँ छोड़ना निर्दयी होगा क्योंकि यह नीचे फर्श पर चढ़ सकता है। इसलिए बेहतर होगा कि कोई अनजाने में इसे कुचलने से पहले इसकी देखभाल कर लें। वह बच्चे से उसे सावधानी से उठाकर बाहर बगीचे में ले जाने के लिए कहती है और उसे डैफोडिल के फूलों को खिलाने के लिए वहीं छोड़ देती है।

अगले छंद में कवि आश्चर्य करता है कि ऐसा विश्वास अभी भी क्यों कायम है जहाँ लोग अभी भी मानते हैं कि चरित्र का निर्माण केवल सलाह के शब्दों से होता है, दूसरों के कार्यों से नहीं। वह उदास महसूस करती है, क्योंकि बच्चे ने उसकी बातों पर विश्वास किया और धीरे से घोंघे के साथ व्यवहार किया। वह दुखी लेकिन चकित महसूस करती है क्योंकि बच्चा अपनी माँ (कवि) की बातों पर विश्वास करता था जो वास्तव में अपने कार्यों में कोमल नहीं थी। माँ (कवि) ने उसकी बातों को गंभीरता से लिया था, जबकि उसे पता था कि माँ ने बच्चे के बिल्ली के बच्चे को डुबो दिया था और अपने करीबी रिश्तेदारों को भी धोखा दिया था। कवि ने ऐसे कटु सत्य दूसरों तक भी पहुँचाए थे। कड़वी सच्चाई यह है कि, एक बात का प्रचार करना और दूसरी का अभ्यास करना मानव स्वभाव है और इस तरह इस दुनिया में चीजें चलती रहती हैं।

वह दृढ़ता से मानती है कि एक बच्चे की माँ होने के नाते, वह अपने बच्चे को अच्छा और कोमल होने की सलाह देने में सही है। और इसलिए माँ और बच्चा दोनों घोंघे जैसे छोटे जीवों के प्रति दयालु हैं।

She asks the child to carefully pick him up and take him outside to the garden and leave him there to feed on the daffodil flowers.

In the next verse the poet wonders why such a belief still prevails where people still believe that character is built only by words of advice and not by the actions of others. She feels sad, as the child believed her words and treated the snail gently. She feels sad but amazed because the child believed in the words of her mother (poet) who was not really gentle in her actions. The mother (poet) took his words seriously even though she knew that the mother had drowned the baby kittens and betrayed her close relatives as well. The poet had conveyed such harsh truths to others as well. The bitter truth is, it is human nature to preach one thing and practice another and that's how things go on in this world.

She firmly believes that being the mother of a child, she is right in advising her child to be nice and gentle. And so both mother and child are kind to little creatures like snails.
