After his schooling, he joined Kashi Vidya Pitta and studied there for four years. He was bright in subjects like philosophy, economics, political science and social science. He was awarded the title of 'Shastri' during his studies at Kashi Vidyapita. When he was a student, he had to live on only Rs. 2.5 per month.

He later joined the Indian National Congress and participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Dandi March. After independence, he served as the Home and Transport Minister in UP. Later he was After that he was appointed as the Prime Minister. Nehru's death.

When the country was facing food shortage, he and his family ate only once in a day and he urged the people of the country to eat even less. When he was the prime minister, he could not even buy a car and had to buy a car after taking a loan.
