Doha 1: Poet, W.H. Davis begins by questioning the purpose of life which is so full of anxiety that it does not allow us any time to stand still and look at the world. In the next few couplets, he describes the various things that people are unable to do due to lack of leisure.

Doha 2: Sheep and cows can often be seen standing still in vast open fields and staring from afar. People leading busy lives will not have the time to stand and gaze under the branches of trees.

Couple 3: W.H. Davis further adds that when such people walk through a forest or woods, they will be in a great hurry to notice nooks and crannies in the grass where squirrels hide their nuts. They will not have the leisure to notice different aspects of the natural world around them.

Couple 4: In daylight, the streams appear to glow under the influence of sunlight, making it appear as if the streams are full of stars like the night sky. However, people burdened with anxiety and leading a hasty life without leisure are likely to miss out on such beauty of nature.

Doha 5 and 6: The poet says that the hustle and bustle of life gives people no time to turn at the sight of a beautiful young woman and marvel at her dancing feet. They are unable to observe him leisurely as his mouth shapes the smile that begins with his eyes. W.H. Davis personifies the beauty of the world around us, which often fails to see due to lack of leisure. The dancing feet and captivating smile reflect different aspects of the beauty around us.

Doha 7: In the last couplet of the poem, Davies says that a life so tied up with worry that it gives no time for leisure is a miserable life indeed. It means if we don't have time to rest physically or mentally then our life is bad.
