He was born on 7 March 1849. Fei was attracted to the wonders of nature and learned techniques for growing various crops. After reading Darwin's book, he decided to devote his life to developing new varieties of plants.
He started gardening in the market at the age of 21. He was successful in selling high quality vegetables. He planted 29 seeds from the early rose potato plant and has produced superior quality till date. This potato, called the "Idaho potato," is native to the northwestern U.S. It is grown in thousands of acres.

3. He could identify and select those plants which showed desirable changes. He could also select them for further experiments.
Thus he succeeded in producing a white blackberry and called it the paradox. The rejected saplings measured 12 feet high, 14 feet wide, 22 feet tall and had 65,000 berry bushes. Of them he decided to keep less than 2 dozen for further studies.
