This poem is written by Clifford Henry Diment. The poem is about the harmful effects of poaching and indiscriminate felling of trees.

In this poem, Henry says that once as he was walking, he stopped to see a man cutting down a tree. The tree was very old and it seemed to be a century old. As he was cutting it, the sharp ax shone brightly and it struck deep inside the bark and the yellow wood chips (which usually come when we cut some wood material) flew into the air.

The poet liked this sight. As the man was cutting the tree, a melodious sound was heard as soon as he hit the ax and he stopped as soon as he took it off.

The poet says that people have many reasons for cutting trees. It may have fallen because it was too old but it contained more good than a growing tree. Henry then compared the death of the tree to the death of thousands of men.

The poem gives the message that the beauty of nature should be preserved and enjoyed. Thus the poet has sarcastically condemned the attack on nature.
