Nagendra was an orphan. He didn't have any work. He was very smart and learned a lot by watching his father. One day a brilliant idea came to his mind. He went to town and rented a small space to set up a shop. He hung a board above his shop with 'Wisdom for Sale' written on it. He exhorted that all types of intelligence are available at reasonable rates. But those who listened to him laughed at him and did not buy a single piece of wisdom.

One day, Babu, the son of a rich merchant Gupta passed by Nagendra's shop. He heard Nagendra's screams. Babu was a foolish boy. He did not know the meaning of knowledge. He thought it was a vegetable or a thing. He asked Nagendra what would be its cost per kg. Nagendra replied that he did not sell knowledge by weight, rather he sold it by quality. Babu put down a nickel and asked Nagendra to give him knowledge equal to that of a nickel.

Nagendra wrote on a piece of paper, "It is not wise to see two people standing and fighting" and gave it to Babu. Babu went home and showed his father what he had bought for a nickel. His father scolds him for wasting money on useless things. He went to Nagendra, scolded him and asked for his money back because he had cheated on his son. He even threatened to call the police. Nagendra said that if Gupta returned his intelligence, he would return the money.

Gupta threw a piece of paper at him and asked him to return the money. It was only a piece of paper, Nagendra said, not the advice he had given to Babu. He told Gupta that he would return the money if he signed a document to the effect that his son would never use his advice and that he would stand up and watch people fight. Gupta did the same and went back.

The king of that country had two queens. There was animosity between them. Their slaves also hated each other. One day both the maids went to the same shop and wanted to buy the same pumpkin. The fight started and it got very fierce. Babu, who wanted to honor the contract, went there and stood up to watch the fight. Two maids saw him and each of them asked him to be his witness.

The maids went back to the palace and reported the matter to their mistresses. The queens complained to the king. Each of them sent the news to Babu that he was a witness on his behalf. He also threatened to behead him if he did not speak in his favour. Babu and his father got scared. They went to Nagendra and asked for his wisdom. Nagendra took five hundred rupees and advised Babu to pretend to be mad.

When the king called him, Babu went to the court. He behaved like he was crazy. When questioned, he used absurd words. The king lost his patience and sent him off. Babu was very happy. He told everyone about Nagendra's intelligence. Nagendra became very famous.

Gupta was worried that his son always had to behave like a mad boy. If not, the king will find out the truth and punish him. So, he went to Nagendra with his son and asked for his help. Nagendra took five hundred more rupees from him. He advised Babu to go to the Raja when he was in a good mood and tell him the truth. Babu found the king in a happy state and told him everything. The king laughed and forgave him.

The king, who came to know about Nagendra, sent him and asked him if he had any knowledge to sell. Nagendra replied that he had a lot of knowledge and would sell it to the king for one lakh rupees. The king gave him money. Nagendra wrote 'Think deeply before doing anything' on a paper and gave it to the king.

The king embroidered Salah on his pillow and engraved it on his cups and plates. After a few months the king fell ill. The minister and one of the queens was planning to kill the king. He bribed the doctor and asked him to poison the king's medicine. The Vaidya mixed the poison in the medicine and brought it to the king in a golden cup. The king picked up the cup and saw the words engraved on it. He looked at the medicine thoughtfully for a long time.

The doctor felt nervous. He thought that the king had come to know of his betrayal. He fell at the feet of the king and started begging for mercy. On discovering the conspiracy, the king banished the doctor and sentenced the minister and his queen to death. He realized that Nagendra's advice had saved his life. He made Nagendra his minister and respected him.
