अमृतप्रभा प्रागज्योतिष की राजकुमारी थी। वह एक खूबसूरत युवती थी। जब उसकी शादी की उम्र हो गई, तो राजा ने एक स्वयंवर की व्यवस्था की। वह अपना पति चुनने के लिए स्वतंत्र थी। कई प्रेमी, जिन्होंने उसकी महान सुंदरता के बारे में सुना था, उससे शादी करने के लिए प्रागज्योतिष के पास आए।

कश्मीर का राजकुमार मेघवाहन भी वहाँ आया। अमृतप्रभा ने दरबार में प्रवेश किया, सभी सिपाहियों को देखा और फिर मेघवाहन के गले में माला डाल दी। वह बहुत खुश हुआ। मेघवाहन और अमृतप्रभा राजा का आशीर्वाद लेने के लिए उनकी ओर बढ़े। पुजारी ने आश्चर्य से कहा कि वरुण के छत्र ने राजकुमार पर अपनी छाया डाली है। राजा ने भी इस पर ध्यान दिया और मेघवाहन से कहा कि वह देवताओं पर कृपा करता है। मेघवाहन ने अपने बगल में एक सुंदर, चकाचौंध, सफेद छत्र देखा, जिसमें अति सुंदर सजावट थी, जो उस पर अपनी छाया डाल रहा था।

राजा ने समझाया कि यह समुद्र के देवता वरुण की छत्र थी, और इसने पूरी दुनिया के एक शासक पर ही अपनी छाया डाली। राजा को यकीन था कि मेघवाहन का महान और प्रसिद्ध होना तय है। मेघवाहन शुभ संकेतों से प्रसन्न था। वह अमृतप्रभा और स्वर्गीय छत्र के साथ घर लौट आया। कश्मीर के तत्कालीन शासक ने प्रार्थना के जीवन को अपनाया और राज्य के मामलों की उपेक्षा की। मंत्रियों ने मेघवाहन से उनका राजा बनने का अनुरोध किया क्योंकि वह बहादुर, प्रसिद्ध और अच्छे स्वभाव का था। मेघवाहन ने उनका प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर लिया और राजा बन गए।

Amritprabha was the princess of Pragjyotish. She was a beautiful girl. When she attained the age of marriage, the king arranged a swayamvara. She was free to choose her husband. Many lovers, who had heard of her great beauty, came to Pragjyotish to marry her.

Prince Meghavahan of Kashmir also came there. Amritprabha entered the court, saw all the soldiers and then put a garland around Meghavahana's neck. He was very happy. Meghavahana and Amritprabha proceeded to seek the king's blessings. The priest said in surprise that Varun's umbrella had cast its shadow on the prince. The king also noticed this and told Meghavahana that he had mercy on the gods. Meghavahan saw a beautiful, dazzling, white parasol with exquisite decorations, casting its shadow on him.

The king explained that it was the umbrella of Varuna, the god of the sea, and cast its shadow on only one ruler of the whole world. The king was sure that Meghavahana was destined to be great and famous. Meghvahan was pleased with the auspicious signs. He returned home with Amritprabha and the heavenly umbrella. The then ruler of Kashmir adopted a life of prayer and neglected the affairs of the state. The ministers requested Meghavahana to be their king as he was brave, famous and of good nature. Meghavahana accepted his offer and became the king.

Meghavahan passed a law against the killing of living beings in his kingdom. His ambition was to conquer other states and enforce that law on them as well. He set out to fulfill his ambition. Once, with his army, he was resting near the sea under the shade of palm trees. He thought of conquering the island of Lanka and teaching the demons how to live a peaceful life. But, he did not know how to cross the sea with his army. Suddenly he heard a scream in the air and a call was heard saying that he was going to be killed even under the rule of Meghavahana. It looked as if it had come from some nearby wood. Meghvahan got excited. He ran towards the wood. He came near a Durga temple and saw that some kind of human sacrifice was taking place on the steps of the temple. He found a man pleading for mercy and a wild sword standing over him.

Meghavahan ordered him to stop. The barbarian recognized the king and fell at his feet. He said that he was the leader of the barbarians and that his son had succumbed to a deadly disease and was on his death bed. He wanted to kill the man and please the gods to save his son. He also said, if his son died, the rest of his group would lay down their lives. Meghvahan felt sorry for the boy.

The barbarian said that the man was walking alone and friendless in the forest. According to Berber, the life of the victim was insignificant compared to the lives of his son and members of the army. Meghavahan saw the panicked person and took his decision. He told the barbara that he would save his son and the victim as well. He asked Barbarik to kill him and offer his body as a sacrifice to the goddess.

The barbarian could not believe his ears. He told Meghavahana that he is the king and that his life should be protected at all times. He requested the king to kill the victim as his life had no value. Meghavahan insisted on being killed to save the life of the victim and the son of the barbarian. The barbarian hung his head and remained silent. Meghavahan decides to kill himself. He drew his sword and was about to shoot himself with it. Then someone took his hand. Lord Varuna appeared before him.

Lord Varuna praised Meghavahana for his nobility of mind and compassion. He said that he had created that illusion to take the exam of Meghavahan. Lord Varuna said that he had come to retrieve his chhatra, which was taken away by King Bhauma, father of Meghavahana's father-in-law. Chhatra had the powers to suppress the calamities in his land. Meghavahana bowed to Lord Varuna and returned the umbrella to him. He requested Lord Varuna to help him cross the sea and conquer the island of Lanka. Lord Varuna granted him a boon and Meghavahana promised to draw water whenever he wanted.

The next day Meghavahan rode on his horse and went to the sea. The sea water separated and Meghavahana was able to reach Lanka with his army. He befriended King Vibhishana of Lanka and everything ended peacefully. When Meghavahan returned home, Amritprabha found the umbrella missing. He asked her about this. Meghavahan told him that it was not his at any point, but that the blessings of his master would guide him in his life.
