अरुण एक बोर्डिंग स्कूल का छात्र था। वह वापस स्कूल जा रहा था। उनके माता-पिता ने उन्हें अकेले यात्रा करने के लिए पर्याप्त बूढ़ा माना। इसलिए, वह बस से अपने शहर से निकला था और शाम को ही अम्बाला आ गया था। उन्हें जिस ट्रेन में सवार होना था, वह रात 12 बजे थी। वह प्लेटफॉर्म नंबर एक पर बैठा था। 8 अंबाला स्टेशन पर उत्तर की ओर जाने वाली ट्रेन की प्रतीक्षा में। उसके लिए यह एक लंबा इंतजार था। वह मंच से ऊपर-नीचे चलता था, बुक स्टॉल पर ब्राउज़ करता था, आवारा कुत्तों को बिस्कुट खिलाता था। उन्होंने ट्रेनों को आते-जाते देखा। जब भी कोई ट्रेन आती तो प्लेटफॉर्म गतिविधि का केंद्र बन जाता, और ट्रेन के जाने के बाद यह शांत हो जाता। वह प्लेटफार्म पर इधर-उधर भागते-भागते थककर अपने सूटकेस पर बैठकर रेल की पटरियों को निहारता रहा।

He was sitting on platform no. 8 Waiting for northbound train at Ambala station. It was a long wait for him. He walked up and down the stage, browsed the book stalls, fed biscuits to stray dogs. He saw the trains coming and going. Whenever a train arrived, the platform would become the center of activity, and it would be quiet after the train had left. Tired of running here and there on the platform, he sat on his suitcase and gazed at the railway tracks.

A low voice from behind asked if he was alone. Arun saw a middle-aged woman in a white sari, with black kind eyes over it. There was a kind of dignity in him that made Arun stand up respectfully and respond. He told her that he was alone and that he was going to school. He asked him if his parents had not come to see him off. Arun said that he did not live there and he could travel alone. The woman accepted his word. He gave Satish a bag of fruits, a cricket bat and a box of chocolates. She asked Satish to share food with Arun.
