David Diop's poem 'Africa' reflects his hope for an independent African nation and the problems brought by colonialism to the continent. Through this poem, Diop tries to send a message of hope and resistance to the people of Africa.

The poem begins with Diop reminiscing about Africa, a land he has not seen but has only heard from his grandmother's songs. His choice of words like 'far' is symbolic of how far he is from his country, a sentiment based on his real life as he lived in France as a child and only moved to Africa in the 1950s.

Despite this, he paints a vivid scene of proud warriors walking across Africa and its 'ancestral savanna'. You can understand how much he misses his homeland from his stress on the word 'Africa', and he keeps calling it 'My Africa' to emphasize that this is his land and the feeling of patriotism towards him .

He says he has never known Africa, but despite the distance, he cannot deny how much of it is part of him. The 'beautiful black blood' flowing in his veins describes his African origin and shows how much Africa is part of him and his love for it and his people. The next few lines are angry and accusatory as he insists that it is the blood and sweat of his people irrigating the fields for the benefit of other people.

The blood of their sweat, the sweat of their work, the work of their slavery and the slavery of their children have enriched a distant land. By this he is pointing fingers at colonists who exploited black people and used them as slaves to profit from their hard work. So the poet wants to know what is real Africa.

The poet urges black people to stand up for the pain and humiliation they are facing in their own land. He reminds them of the strength and pride that they possess and to say no to the colonist's whip that works them under the hot afternoon sun and leaves scars on their backs. Despite this pain, he urges them to be strong and persevere and not let it break despite the weight of their suffering.

The serious question of the poet is answered in a serious tone. The poet presents the African continent as an angry elder. Africa's wise voice reproaches him for having 'sharp' ideas, implying that the continent is aware of impending changes or revolution. It urges Africans to be patient and not rush like children because change is on the horizon.

The voice speaks of a tree that is found alone among white and withered flowers. The tree represents the youth of 'young and strong' Africa who are waiting patiently but 'obstinately' until they find the freedom they desire.

At this time the tree is alone, that is, the African struggle is a lonely war, but they will achieve freedom and independence, no matter how bitter the taste in achieving it. The tree is among the 'white and wither' flowers, meaning the white colonists will wither over time, while the young Africans will grow in strength and wait for their moment of independence.
