उनका जन्म 1900 में हरियाणा के कालका में एक रूढ़िवादी हिंदू बंगाली परिवार में हुआ था। उन्होंने 19 साल की उम्र में परंपराओं को तोड़ा और स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के एक प्रमुख व्यक्ति आसफ अली से शादी की। वह उनसे बीस साल बड़े थे। अपनी शादी के बाद, उन्होंने स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन और फिर जीवन भर समाज सेवा में भाग लिया।

वहीं मैदान में। अंग्रेजों ने धारा 144 के तहत बैठक को अवैध घोषित कर दिया। ब्रिटिश हवलदार ने जनता को दो मिनट के भीतर तितर-बितर करने की चेतावनी दी। अरुणा ने राष्ट्रीय ध्वज फहराने के लिए हाथापाई (स्क्रॉल) की और कार्ड खींच लिया। जैसे ही उसने झंडा फहराया, पुलिस ने भीड़ पर आंसू गैस के गोले दागे। वह मौके से फरार हो गई। 9 अगस्त को अरुणा के अवज्ञा के कार्य ने वस्तुतः भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन की शुरुआत को चिह्नित किया। सरकार ने रुपये के इनाम की घोषणा की। उसे पकड़ने के लिए 500। गांधीजी ने उसे भूमिगत से बाहर आने की सलाह दी, नहीं तो वह एक कंकाल में सिमट जाएगी। इसके अलावा, उसने उसे खुद को आत्मसमर्पण करने और उसकी गिरफ्तारी के लिए दी गई कीमत लेने की सलाह दी ताकि पुरस्कार राशि को महान भारतीय उद्देश्य के लिए आरक्षित किया जा सके।

Aruna Asaf Ali was a famous freedom fighter and advocate for the cause of women. She has been called the "Grand Old Lady of the Freedom Movement". When the freedom struggle was raging and the youth were sacrificing their lives, she entered politics.

He was born in 1900 to an orthodox Hindu Bengali family in Kalka, Haryana. She broke traditions at the age of 19 and married Asaf Ali, a prominent figure in the freedom struggle. He was twenty years older than her. After her marriage, she took part in the freedom movement and then in social service for the rest of her life.

Aruna Asaf Ali's first political participation was during the Salt Satyagraha. For addressing a public meeting and leading the procession, he was arrested by the police and jailed for a year. He was released as a public movement was launched in his support. He was arrested again and put in jail. There she went on a hunger strike to protest the torture inflicted on political prisoners. His demands were accepted, but he was kept in another prison for ten years. The Bombay Congress session was held in 1942. A resolution was passed in the session. The committee had planned to hoist the tricolor at the Gowalia Tank Maidan.

The British somehow came to know of the plan and arrested prominent leaders including Gandhiji Maulana Azad, Congress President was to hoist the tricolor in a public meeting at Gowalia Tank Maidan. Aruna Asaf Ali decided to go there.

Further, he advised him to surrender himself and take the price paid for his arrest so that the prize money could be reserved for the great Indian cause.

Aruna surrendered only when the warrants for her arrest were revoked on 26 January 1946. After India got independence, he turned to social work. She helped establish the National Association of Indian Women in 1954.

In 1992 he was awarded the Nehru Prize for International Understanding. He died in July 1996. The Government of India posthumously awarded him the Bharat Ratna, its highest civilian award.
