पाठ 'जस्टिस एबव सेल्फ' मुंशी प्रेमचंद द्वारा लिखा गया है। यह दो करीबी दोस्तों, अलगू और जुम्मन की कहानी है। वे अच्छे दोस्त थे। उनकी दोस्ती इतनी मजबूत थी कि जब दोनों में से कोई एक गांव से दूर जाता था तो दूसरा अपने परिवार की देखभाल करता था। दोनों का अपने गाँव में बहुत सम्मान था। जुम्मन की एक बूढ़ी चाची थी, उसके नाम कुछ जायदाद थी। उसने अपनी संपत्ति जुम्मन को हस्तांतरित कर दी ताकि वह उनके साथ रहे और वह उसकी देखभाल करे। एक दो साल अच्छे गए। लेकिन इसके बाद स्थिति बदल गई।

जुम्मन और उसकी पत्नी बुढ़िया से थक चुके थे। वह और उसकी पत्नी उसके प्रति उदासीन थे। बुढ़िया को जीवित रहने के लिए थोड़ा सा भी खाना नहीं परोसा गया। इसके अलावा बूढ़ी औरत भूख से पीड़ित थी, उसे अपमान सहना पड़ा। एक महीने बाद बुढ़िया ने जुम्मन के घर में नहीं रहने का फैसला किया। एक दिन उसने उसे अपना इरादा बताया कि वह अलग रहने के लिए उसके घर से बाहर जा रही है और उसे मासिक भत्ता देने के लिए कहा ताकि वह एक अलग रसोई स्थापित कर सके। जुम्मन शेख ने अपनी पत्नी की ओर से तर्क दिया, क्योंकि वह घर चलाना बेहतर जानती थी। इससे बुढ़िया नाराज हो गई।

बुढ़िया मामले को ग्राम पंचायत ले गई और अलगू चौधरी से बात की. अलगू चौधरी को नहीं पता था कि क्या करना है, क्योंकि जुम्मन शेख उसका सबसे अच्छा दोस्त था। वह अपने दोस्त के खिलाफ नहीं जा सकता था। बुढ़िया ने अलगू से कहा कि वह पंचायत आकर उसे न्याय दिलाए। पंचायत की बैठक में सभी सदस्य एकत्रित हुए। दूसरों से परामर्श करने के बाद अलगू ने कहा कि उनकी राय है कि जुम्मन को अपनी चाची (बूढ़ी औरत) को मासिक भत्ता देना होगा, अन्यथा संपत्ति उसके पास वापस चली गई। अलगू के फैसले ने उसके दोस्त को नाराज कर दिया और कुछ हद तक अपमान भी किया। इसके बाद अलगू और जुम्मन के बीच दोस्ती का रिश्ता टूट गया। जुम्मन ने अलगू को दुश्मन के रूप में देखा और बदला लेना चाहता था।

दिन बीत गए। अपनी बदकिस्मती के कारण अलगू संकट में था। उसका सामना करना पड़ा। इसलिए उसने इस बैल में से एक को गांव के एक गाड़ी चालक संजू साहू को बेच दिया। समझ यह थी कि साहू एक महीने में बैल की कीमत चुका देगा। ऐसा हुआ कि अलगू द्वारा बेचा गया बैल मर गया, बैल की मृत्यु के कई महीने बाद लिखा गया, अलगू ने साहू को उस पैसे की याद दिला दी जो उसने अभी तक भुगतान नहीं किया था।

लेकिन साहू ने उसे दृढ़ता से कहा कि वह उसे बेचारे जानवर के लिए एक पैसा नहीं दे सकता, वह हमारे लिए बर्बादी के अलावा कुछ नहीं लाया। उन्होंने उससे बहस नहीं की। उन्होंने मामले को पंचायत में ले जाने का फैसला किया।

पुराने बरगद के पेड़ के नीचे पंचायत हुई। अलगू ने पंचायत के सामने बताया कि पंच की आवाज भगवान की आवाज थी और उसने कहा कि वह पंच के फैसले का पालन करेगा, चाहे वह कोई भी हो।

पंच के नामांकन का अधिकार साहू को दिया गया था। साहू ने इसे अच्छा समझकर जुम्मन के नाम का प्रस्ताव रखा। अलगू का दिल डूब गया और पीला पड़ गया। जुम्मन प्रधान पंच बने। उन्होंने एक न्यायाधीश के रूप में अपनी जिम्मेदारी और अपने पद की गरिमा को महसूस किया। जुम्मन के लिए अलगू का बदला लेने का यह एक अच्छा मौका था। लेकिन साहू ने फैसला किया कि सच बोलने और न्याय करने के रास्ते में अपनी व्यक्तिगत भावनाओं को आड़े नहीं आने देंगे। पंचायत की बैठक के दिन अलगू और साहू दोनों ने अपने-अपने मामले पेश किए. उनके मामलों को सुनने के बाद जुम्मना ने घोषणा की कि उनकी राय है कि साहू को अलगू को बैल की कीमत चुकानी चाहिए क्योंकि जब साहू ने बैल खरीदा था तो वह किसी भी विकलांगता या बीमारी से पीड़ित नहीं था। बैल की मृत्यु दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण थी लेकिन इसके लिए अलगू को दोषी नहीं ठहराया जा सकता था। फैसला सुनकर अलगू को अपने कानों पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ क्योंकि उसने सोचा था कि जुम्मन बदला लेगा। लेकिन ऐसा नहीं हुआ था. उन्होंने पंचायत की जीत के रूप में जोर से चिल्लाया और कहा कि न्याय था और पंच की आवाज में भगवान थे। इसके तुरंत बाद दोनों दोस्त एक-दूसरे के गले लग गए और पहले की तरह पक्के दोस्त बन गए।

The text 'Justice Above Self' is written by Munshi Premchand. It is the story of two close friends, Algu and Jumman. They were good friends. Their friendship was so strong that when one of them went away from the village, the other looked after his family. Both had great respect in their village. Jumman had an old aunt who had some property in her name. He transferred his property to Jumman so that he could live with them and he would take care of her. A couple of years went well. But after that the situation changed.

Jumman and his wife were tired of the old lady. He and his wife were indifferent to him. The old lady was not served even a little food to survive. Besides this the old woman was suffering from hunger, she had to suffer humiliation. After a month the old lady decided not to stay in Jumman's house. One day he told her his intention that she was going out of his house to live separately and asked him to pay a monthly allowance so that he could set up a separate kitchen. Jumman Shaikh argued on behalf of his wife, as she knew better about running the household. This angered the old lady.

The old lady took the matter to the Gram Panchayat and talked to Algu Chaudhary. Algu Chaudhary did not know what to do, as Jumman Sheikh was his best friend. He couldn't go against his friend. The old lady asked Algu to come to the panchayat and get him justice. All the members gathered in the Panchayat meeting. After consulting the others, Algu said that he was of the opinion that Jumman should pay a monthly allowance to his aunt (the old lady), otherwise the property went back to him. Algu's decision angered his friend and also insulted to some extent. After this the friendship between Algu and Jumman broke down. Jumman saw Algu as an enemy and wanted to take revenge.

Days passed. Algu was in trouble because of his misfortune. He had to face So he sold one of this bull to Sanju Sahu, a cart driver of the village. The understanding was that Sahu would pay the price of the bull in a month. It so happened that the bull sold by Algu died, written several months after the death of the bull, Algu reminded Sahu of the money he had not yet paid.

But Sahu firmly told him that he could not give him a penny for the poor animal, he brought us nothing but ruin. He didn't argue with her. He decided to take the matter to the panchayat.

Panchayat was held under the old banyan tree. Algu told the Panchayat that the voice of the Panch was the voice of God and said that he would abide by the decision of the Panch, no matter what.

The right of nomination of Panch was given to Sahu. Considering it good, Sahu proposed the name of Jumman. Algu's heart sank and turned pale. Jumman became the head panch. He realized his responsibility as a judge and the dignity of his position. It was a good opportunity for Jumman to take revenge of Algu. But Sahu decided not to let his personal feelings come in the way of telling the truth and doing justice. On the day of the Panchayat meeting, both Algu and Sahu presented their cases. Jumna after hearing their cases declared that she was of the opinion that Sahu should pay the price of the bull to Algu because when Sahu bought the bull he was not suffering from any disability or disease. The death of the bull was unfortunate but Algu could not be blamed for it. Hearing the verdict, Algu could not believe his ears as he thought Jumman would take revenge. But this had not happened. He shouted loudly as the victory of the panchayat and said that there was justice and there was God in the voice of the Panch. Soon after, the two friends hugged each other and became firm friends as before.
