महाभारत में कौरवों के हाथों पांडवों ने पासा के खेल में सब कुछ खो दिया और बारह साल तक जंगल में रहना पड़ा। इस दौरान उन्हें सुरक्षा और अपनी दैनिक जरूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए लगातार एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर जाना पड़ता था।
बारहवें वर्ष में एक दिन पांडव भाई हिरण की खोज में जंगल में भटक गए। धूप बहुत तेज थी। पांचों भाई थके-हारे हो गए। युधिष्ठिर अपनी प्यास बुझाना चाहते थे। उसने अपने भाई नकुल से पानी खोजने को कहा।
नकुल ने पेड़ पर चढ़कर चारों ओर देखा। कुछ दूर जाने पर उसे पानी का एक स्थान दिखाई दिया। वह उस स्थान पर पानी लेने गया। उस जगह पर एक तालाब था। जब उसने कुंड में पानी देखा तो वह बहुत खुश हुआ। जैसे ही उसने एक आवाज सुनी, उसने अपना हाथ पानी में डुबाया। आवाज ने उसे उसके सवालों का जवाब देने से पहले पानी न पीने की चेतावनी दी। नकुल ने आवाज की चेतावनी की ओर ध्यान नहीं दिया। उसने घुटने टेककर पानी पिया।
जैसे ही उसने पानी पिया, उसे नींद आने लगी और वह ऐसे गिर पड़ा जैसे मर गया हो। चूंकि नकुल लंबे समय तक वापस नहीं लौटा, इसलिए युधिष्ठिर को बहुत चिंता हुई। उन्होंने सहदेव को यह देखने के लिए भेजा कि मामला क्या है।
सहदेव तालाब में गए। उसने आवाज की चेतावनी की भी परवाह नहीं की और पानी पी लिया। उसका वैसा ही अंजाम हुआ जैसा नकुल का था। सहदेव के न लौटने पर युधिष्ठिर ने अर्जुन और फिर भीम को भेजा। अर्जुन और भीम दोनों का वैसा ही हश्र हुआ जैसा अन्य भाइयों का हुआ।
जब चारों भाई युधिष्ठिर के वापस नहीं लौटे तो वे बहुत चिंतित हुए और फिर वे स्वयं यह देखने गए कि उनके भाइयों का क्या हुआ। वह उस दिशा में आगे बढ़ा, जिस दिशा में उसके भाइयों ने लिया था। जब वह एक कुंड के पास आया तो उसने देखा कि उसके चार भाई जमीन पर बेहोश पड़े हैं, सभी मृत दिखाई दे रहे हैं। वह चौंक गया। अपने भाइयों के साथ क्या हुआ, यह जानने से पहले वह अपनी प्यास बुझाने के लिए कुंड में उतर गया। एक बार बिना रूप के एक आवाज ने उसे चेतावनी दी कि वह उसके सवालों का जवाब देने से पहले पानी न पिए, नहीं तो उसका भी वैसा ही हश्र होगा जैसा उसके भाइयों ने पानी पीने से पहले उसके सवालों का जवाब दिए बिना किया था।

Nakul climbed the tree and looked around. After going some distance, he saw a spot of water. He went to that place to get water. There was a pond at that place. He was very happy when he saw the water in the pool. As soon as he heard a sound, he dipped his hand in the water. The voice warned him not to drink water before answering his questions. Nakul did not heed the warning of the voice. He knelt down and drank water.
As soon as he drank the water, he fell asleep and fell as if he had died. Since Nakula did not return for a long time, Yudhishthira was very worried. He sent Sahadev to see what was the matter.
