जीन वलजेन अपनी बहन के साथ अपने सात बच्चों के साथ रहते थे। उनका एक गरीब परिवार था। एक दिन उसकी बहन बीमार पड़ गई और परिवार भूखा मर गया। जीन वलजीन ने कोने-कोने में काम की तलाश की लेकिन उन्हें काम नहीं मिला। वह बच्चों को भूखा नहीं देख सका। किसी से कोई मदद नहीं मिली तो उसने चोरी करने का फैसला किया। उसने कुछ रोटी चुरा ली लेकिन उसे गैली में उन्नीस साल की सजा सुनाई गई। तब उनका जीवन परम नरक था। उन्होंने उसे जंगली जानवर की तरह जंजीर में जकड़ लिया। उन्होंने उसके साथ जानवर जैसा व्यवहार किया, उन्होंने उसे भूखा रखा और उससे काम लिया। उसके साथ एक आदमी के रूप में व्यवहार नहीं किया जाता था। उसने कई बार भागने की कोशिश की लेकिन व्यर्थ। वह हर बार पकड़ा गया और अदालत ने उसकी सजा बढ़ा दी। उसने उन्नीस वर्षों तक एक कैदी का जीवन व्यतीत किया और वह कठोर होकर निकला।

He was caught every time and the court extended his sentence. He lived the life of a prisoner for nineteen years and came out hardened.
He decided to work and earn his living but could not find work. Everyone sent him out without helping him. He roamed without food for three days. They regarded him as a criminal. Moving aimlessly, he came to a bishop's house. The bishop's sister, Baptistine, was ready to serve dinner.
Jean Valjean (convict) introduces himself to the bishop and asks for food. The bishop was very kind. He asked his sister to keep another place for Jean Valjean as well as some sheets to stake in Kolkov. Bishop addressed her as a friend and told her to make her feel at home. There was a small lamp which gave poor light. So the bishop asked his sister to bring silver lamps and light them. She brought them and served dinner which consisted of soup, paneer, mutton and a big roti. The criminal eats quickly. He then told his story to the bishop.
The bishop heard her story and told her to lie down and sleep on the couch. Accordingly Jean Valjean slept but he woke up in the middle of the night because of his bed as he had not slept on the bed.

During this four policemen entered the bishop's house and they had brought Jean Valjean with them after seeing him, the bishop told the policemen that he had given the man a swirl pot. The police left him and left.
