In this story Khushwant Singh draws his grandmother's pen. He tells how he spent his childhood with him in the village. He also describes the change in relationships in the city. Finally, he describes the scene leading up to his death.

Khushwant Singh draws an interesting portrait of his grandmother here. He presents her as a gentle, loving and deeply religious old woman. Singh says that his grandmother was an old lady. Her face was so wrinkled that it was hard to believe that she was once young and beautiful. His hair was white as snow. There was a slight bend in his back. He could be seen reciting his rosary all the time. A picture of the author's grandfather hung on the wall. He also appeared old and it was hard to believe that he ever had a wife.

It appears they only have so many and so many grandchildren. Singh was the only child at that time. His parents left him in the village under the care of their grandmother and went to live in the city. She used to prepare him for school, and also fed him chapatis. The school was attached to a temple. All the children were sitting on the verandah reciting the alphabet while their grandmother was busy reading the holy scriptures.

Finally, in the evening, the writer and grandmother would go back home, feeding the dogs along the way.

After a friendly relationship with his grandmother, he had to adapt to a new life in the city. It was a turning point for grandmother and grandson. Both of them were sent to settle in the city with his parents. The writer went to an English school but grandmother did not like the way she was taught. Although Singh and his grandmother shared the same room, she was unable to help him. Moreover, she was also disappointed that he was learning music which she considered unsuitable for gentlemen.

In course of time, when Singh went to university he was given a separate room. It really broke the normal link of their relationship completely. Grandma accepted this fact, and she would spin the wheel from sunrise to sunset to compensate. In the afternoon, she used to take rest by feeding small pieces of bread to the sparrows. They were his best friends and the sparrows also liked his company.

Later Singh went abroad for five years for higher studies. He had doubts as to whether his grandmother would be alive until he returned. She also thought that this might be the last physical contact between them when she came to the railway station to see him off. However, five years later, when he returned, he was unbelievably welcomed by his grandmother, who looked like he hadn't grown up a day. Singh observed that even when everyone was happy with her return, the happiest moments for Dadi were with her sparrows.

Later in the evening there was a change in his attitude. She celebrated the return of her grandson by gathering some women from the neighborhood and beating drums for several hours. But, in the morning, Dadi's health deteriorated and she revealed that she was nearing her end. So she decided that she was not going to waste a moment by talking. So he prayed. All of a sudden, the rosary fell from her hand and she let out her last breath and it was clear that she was no more.

After the preparations for the last rites, the family members went to collect his body for the last journey. The golden flame of the setting sun was shining in his room. And thousands of sparrows gathered in and around her room to pay their last respects to the grandmother. The sparrows never chirp or notice the pieces of bread thrown at them. When the grandmother's corpse was taken away, the sparrow flew away silently.
