Mulk Raj Anand's 'A Pair of Mustachios' is a thought provoking story told in a humorous manner. It focuses on the false intentions of people to which they attach themselves to appease their false feelings. The story can be understood in two parts. In the first part, the narrator tells about the types of mustaches prevalent in our country. In the second part the author tells us a misconception about a person's decency.
As the author says that different types of mustaches are worn in our country. Some wear Chinese type, some American and some English. Some keep it in a convenient way and some in a fashionable way. Whatever one thing may be, it is certain that it is a symbol of one's pride and prejudice. The lion mustache symbolizes the pride of the Maharaja type spirit. A man with such a mustache always tries to make himself a king, maharaja, nawab or great emperor.
The tiger-like mustache symbolizes the ranks of the feudal elite, who have nothing but pride in their cleanliness and a few mementos of past glory. Then there is the goat mustache worn by the commercial bourgeoisie and the shopkeeper class. The Charlie Chaplin mustache is for the lower middle class, clerks and professionals who are of a compromising nature between the traditional full mustache and the square-shaven. Curzon's cropped mustache is often worn by sahabs and barristers. Some other types of sheep mustaches are worn by porters and lower order while rat whiskers are worn by farmers. It is often seen that there is a tendency to prove oneself better than others on the basis of the style of the mustache.
The author presents an interesting story to satirize the false belief of the people. Ramanand said that there was a grocery-cum-money in the village. He was doing brisk business. His goat's mustache was a sign of his position. But his mustache was cut at the ends in such a way that he almost looked like a tiger mustache. Nobody seemed to mind. One day Khan Azam Khan, middle aged handsome and dignified man with tiger mustache came across Seth Ramanand. Azam Khan always claimed himself to be a descendant from an ancient Afghan family, which submitted nobles and councilors to the court of the great Mughals. He had come to Seth to pledge his wife's gold rings. He noticed the reverse trend of Ramananda's goat's mustache hair.
So first of all he asked Ramanand to bring down his mustache. After some discussion, the veteran Seth did what Khan wanted. Then the trade talks were finalized. Seth Ramanand told Azam Khan that he had humbled himself as Khan was doing business with him. Otherwise he was not just a worm. Khan was still not satisfied as he saw that Seth had tricked him by letting down only a part of his mustache. Khan wanted the other side to be down as well. This made the moneylender now impatient. However he convinced Azam Khan to reduce his other side as well when he comes again. Then Khan left his shop.
But Khan was still not satisfied. He could not diminish his pride, the pride of generations of his forefathers, who wore a tiger mustache as a mark of rank. It was too much for him to emulate his mark of respect by a grocer. He went home and brought a necklace that had been with his family for seven generations. He placed it in front of the grocer and asked him to bring down the tip of his mustache. The grocer replied that he would do a trade first. Khan was ready to pledge the necklace at any cost as his main concern was the tip of the grocery shopkeeper's moustache. However, the business was settled. But as soon as Khan left, he turned and saw that the moneylender's mustache was curled like that of Khan's. Khan became furious. Pansari wanted to bring him to his senses.
But he was not ready to compromise. Khan wanted to bring down Pansari's mustache. Then the moneylender too was adamant on not doing so. He said that he would not do so even though Khan had mortgaged all the jewelery he had. Khan was ready to sacrifice all his wealth, position, pots and pans, his clothes and even his house, just to see the grocer's moustache down. The grocer was ready to accept the deal. The zamindar and some others also heard this and agreed to stand with the grocer. Azam Khan lost everything to pacify his false feudal feelings. He simply said 'my father was a sultan'. Now he was poor.
