The play begins in the kitchen of the bishop's hut. The kitchen is clean but adequately equipped. As the play begins and the curtain rises, the audience finds Persom and Mary in the kitchen of Persom, Bishop's widowed sister arguing with Mary, the housekeeper. It's 11 o'clock in the night. The bishop has gone out to care for Mary's ailing mother. Persom is deeply concerned about the whereabouts of his brother, who is overstraining himself for the sake of the poor and needy. Mary tells him that the bishop has sold his silver salt-cellars to help a poor woman pay the rent.

Hearing this, Parsu gets angry and starts crying. Just then the bishop enters the hut. He asks Mane, the maid, to run the house as his mother is feeling better. He gives her his muffler because it's too cold outside. He prays for her and her mother. Mary leaves the cottage with gratitude. Parasom gets angry with his brother for giving his everything. She remarks that one day he will also sell his candles to help some needy. The bishop says that he wants to keep dying because he was given to him by his dying mother.

He says that once he stole to buy food for his wife, who was starving. But he was arrested and put in jail. His wife died the night he was sentenced. Prison life was a life of hell. His suffering made him a hardened criminal. One day they forgot to chain him, so he ran away and remained hungry till that day. They were looking for him everywhere.

The bishop consoles the guilty. He advised them to take rest for sometime. He makes a bed for her to lie on. The bishop leaves the room, leaving the convict alone. His eyes catch sight of the silver candles on the mantelpiece. He plans to steal them for a while to live a better new life. There is a struggle in his mind. He feels for Bishop who has been very kind to him but then hardens himself. He hides the candles in his coat and runs away cautiously.

As the criminal comes out, Parasom wakes up and hears the door slamming and sounds the alarm. She comes running and sees that the criminal has run away with the candle. She calls the bishop and tells the bishop to inform the police but the bishop doesn't want to. He consoles himself and says: 'He needs them more than me. He refuses to take any action against the guilty. He cannot think of sending her back to jail to suffer more.

Just then a constable along with three policemen enters the hut carrying the guilty and stolen candles. He tells Bishop that they found him slipping suspiciously. When he was searched, the candles fell out of his pocket. As soon as he remembered the bishop's candles, he brought it here. He asks the bishop if they are his candles. The bishop tells the sergeant that the man is his best friend, and that he himself has given him the candle. On this the constable frees the criminal and leaves with his men.

This last stroke of Bishop's sympathetic demeanor shakes the offender to boot. He apologizes to the bishop and feels sorry for what he did. Brings tears to his eyes. He seeks the bishop's permission to go to Paris and start a virtuous life there. When he turns to die the bishop gives him the candle. He also tells him about a deserted path through the middle of the forest from which he can escape. The offender stands with his head raised, bowing before the bishop. Bishop lovingly puts his hand on her shoulder. The bishop tells him to remember that the poor body has died in the temple of the living God. After the convict is let out, the bishop goes down on his knees in prayer.
