"टू ए स्काईलार्क' अंग्रेजी साहित्य की महानतम कविताओं में से एक है। यह पी.बी.-शेल्व द्वारा लिखा गया है। स्काईलार्क का स्वागत करते हुए कवि कहता है कि यह केवल एक पक्षी नहीं है, बल्कि एक लापरवाह हल्का-फुल्का पक्षी है जो पहले कभी नहीं देखा गया है। यह स्वर्ग से सीधे अपने प्रचुर और प्रचुर मात्रा में प्राकृतिक सहज संगीत नोट्स डालता है। यह आग के बादल की तरह पृथ्वी से ऊँचे और ऊंचे झरनों की ओर जाता है। इसका गायन चारों ओर लहर के रूप में उगता है और चढ़ता है। यह डूबते सूरज की सुनहरी रोशनी के बीच एक अशरीरी आनंद की तरह तैर रहा है और दौड़ रहा है, जिस पर बादल चमक रहे हैं।

कवि वास्तविक अर्थों में पक्षी को परिभाषित करने में विफल रहता है। इससे पहले इतनी तेज बूंद कभी नहीं प्रवाहित हुई, जितनी उसकी धुन आती है। चिड़िया एक कवि की तरह है जो विचारों के झुंड में छिपी हुई है, जब तक कि पूरी दुनिया सहानुभूतिपूर्ण आशाओं और भयों के लिए तैयार नहीं हो जाती, तब तक बिना रुके भजन बजते रहते हैं। कवि के लिए यह महल की मीनार में एक उच्च-जन्मी युवती प्रतीत होती है जो अपने मधुर संगीत से अपनी प्रेम भरी आत्मा को शांत करती है। कभी-कभी यह ग्लो-वर्म जैसा दिखता है जो बिना कहीं देखे ही फूलों और घास के बीच चमकता है। यह अपने हरे पत्तों से घिरे गुलाब की तरह है। गर्म हवाओं से इसकी सुगंध फैलती है, जो इसकी पत्तियों पर हावी हो जाती है, जिसने इसे दृष्टि से चुरा लिया था। इसका ताजा संगीत वसंत ध्वनि से आगे निकल जाता है जो अब तक हर्षित और स्पष्ट थी।

कवि इस आत्मा या पक्षी से पूछता है कि वह कौन है उसे यह सिखाए कि उसके पास कितने मीठे विचार हैं। कवि ने इतनी दिव्य उल्लास की बाढ़ के बारे में कभी नहीं सुना। इसे किसी भी शादी के कोरस या विजयी गीत के साथ अपने दिव्य संगीत के साथ मिलाना मुश्किल है। फिर भी हमें लगता है कि इसके गीत में एक चाह छिपी है। कवि यह अनुमान लगाने में विफल रहता है कि पक्षी अपने संगीतमय स्वर के माध्यम से क्या उँडेलता है।

इसके पीछे प्रेम या दर्द की अज्ञानता का एक जबरदस्त रहस्य है। इसके गीत के आनंद के पास कभी दुख की छाया नहीं आती क्योंकि केवल प्रेम है और प्रेम है, इसकी पीड़ा नहीं है। चिड़िया का गीत इतनी क्रिस्टल धारा में बहता है कि उसे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता कि वह चल रहा है या सो रहा है। इस लिहाज से भी यह इंसानों से आगे निकल जाता है। पीछे मुड़कर देखना और जो हमारे पास नहीं है उसके लिए दुखी होना मनुष्य का स्वभाव है।

कवि किसी भी तरह से यह महसूस नहीं करता है कि मनुष्य पक्षी की महानता के करीब है, भले ही हम अपने सभी दोषों जैसे घृणा, गर्व या भय को त्याग दें।

पक्षी का महिमामंडन करते हुए कवि कहता है कि यह सभी उपायों या रमणीय ध्वनि और कवियों द्वारा लिखित पुस्तकों में उपलब्ध खजाने से परे है। कवि पक्षी से अनुरोध करता है कि वह अपने मस्तिष्क की आधी खुशी को भी सिखाए। वह चाहता है कि कवि के होठों से पक्षी का सामंजस्यपूर्ण पागलपन हमेशा बहता रहे ताकि पूरी दुनिया उसे सुन सके और उसका आनंद ले सके क्योंकि कवि सुन रहा है और आनंद ले रहा है।

Welcoming the Skylark, the poet says that it is not just a bird, but a carefree light-blooded bird It has never been seen before. Hot winds spread its fragrance, which overwhelms its leaves, which stole it from sight. Its fresh music overtakes the spring sound that had hitherto been joyful and clear.

The poet asks this spirit or bird who he is, to teach him how many sweet thoughts he has. The poet has never heard of such a flood of divine gaiety. It's hard to mix it with any wedding chorus or triumphant song with its divine melody. Yet we feel that there is a hidden desire in its song. The poet fails to guess what the bird pours out through its musical tone.
