This is a fairy tale told through a painter. It describes two fascinating scenes that the Moon saw on two consecutive evenings. The painter-narrator finds it difficult to describe his feelings precisely because he is a painter and not a storyteller. Still he tries. He is a poor boy living in a very narrow street. Since his room is upstairs, there is no dearth of light in his house. From where he experiences living, he feels that life was not comfortable and blissful at all. Here it is quite different.
One evening while sitting in his room, he opens his window and finds the moon in the sky. The Moon has always been very attractive to them. The narrator feels that whenever the moon appears before him he tells her something strange. If he tries to describe them all, he'll make another thousand one Wright-famous fiction classics. So he presents those two stories told by Moon.
Now the narrator is the moon who visits the Indian sky one evening. His face glows in the Ganges water, astonishing in the sky. His image appears to be pierced by thick interconnected banana branches. It bends like a tortoise shell under the moon and a Hindu girl emerges like a beautiful eve in the middle of the thicket. She is delicate and charming. Her sandals are toms because of thorny creeping plants. Still she comes fast. A deer comes there to quench its thirst. The girl has a burning lamp in her hand. She tries to save its flame. It dodges his fingers. He put the burning lamp on the water to float. The flame flickers but still goes out. The girl looks at it with the intensity of the feeling.
She wishes a long life for her fiancé as she believes that a burning lamp will make her fiancée live longer. She prays for the long life of her fiancé and nothing else. His succinctness and devotion seem very strong.
On the second evening the Moon presents a view of the previous evening. It overlooks a small courtyard surrounded by houses. There is a hen with eleven hens. A beautiful girl is running after them. She scares the chicken. The girl's father comes and scolds her. On the second evening the moon again looks towards the same courtyard. Everything is calm. The little girl then comes there quietly. Sir pushes Bolt back and slips into the hen house. She again scares the hen and the chickens. Her father comes and scolds her more vigorously, which she did yesterday. He grabs her roughly.
Tears start pouring out of his eyes. When the father asked what she was doing there, she replied that she wanted to love the hen and apologize for what she did yesterday. She wanted to express her sorrow to the hen. This touches the heart of the father and he pacifies him by kissing him on the forehead. This shows that he also regrets scolding an innocent girl.
