Swami & Friends is the story of a confused friendship between Swaminathan, his four childhood friends and a new boy named Rajam. This happened in 1930 in British-colonial India. The story begins with Swaminathan and his friends Somu, Shankar, Mani and Watana. Swami talks about how all his friends are different from each other and how their friendship is strengthened due to their differences. Soon, however, a new boy arrives, whose name is Rajam, whom Swami and Mani completely despise. It is not until the three children face each other that they realize they have a lot in common and they quickly become friends. After much persuasion, the other three children also accepted Rajam and the six children became temporarily calm.

Later, a prominent Indian politician is arrested and Swamy joins the crowd of protesters. He is carried away by the excitement of the crowd and uses the rock to destroy the school property. When the crowds break up, the Swami has to bear the consequences of his actions. Not only is Swami being forced to go to a tougher and tougher school, but Rajam is hurt by the actions of his friend, which has destabilized their friendship.

To ensure Rajma's friendship, the Swami must atone for his actions; He decided to partner with Rajam and formed his own cricket team called M.C.C. The two children are passionate about the team, but the stress is exacerbated by Swami's rigorous schooling and intense work ethic as they get in the way of their commitment. If he misses the match of the year, he will never talk to Swami again, Rajam threatened.

Despite their best efforts, the Swami has been prevented by his strict headmaster from rushing into his day-to-day affairs. In a fit of rage, Swami threw the headmaster's stick out of the window. Then, frightened by the consequences, Swami decided to flee Malgudi for good and not to return. While fleeing, he loses and wanders aimlessly until he is released. He missed the M.C.C. The match he swore to go to. Knowing that his close friend would never speak to him again, Swami learned from his friend Mani that Rajam was leaving for a new city with his family the next morning.

In a desperate attempt to rectify the situation, Swami rushes to the railway station the next morning with a book which he wants to give Rajam as a way to restore peace. He almost misses the train departure and looks out the window at his close friend, who still refuses to talk to him. Mani should give him the book, because he will not take it from Swami. The story ends when the train leaves and Swami keeps thinking whether his friend will write and he will be forgiven.

This book is a thought provoking reading, suitable for a child between the ages of 7 and 12. The conflict that has arisen throughout the book between Swaminathan and his friends is a problem facing many children today. For example, at the beginning of the book, Swami and his four original friends do a great job of seeing the positive qualities of their differences, but struggle to see the good in Rajam. It's important for young readers to make new friends and adapt to the changes in your existing friends. Another lesson in the book is the importance of using your words to express how you feel rather than your actions. When Swami is upset about the arrested politician, he decides to go out and join the crowd instead of talking to his parents or teachers to express his feelings. Although he did not start with the intention of damaging the school property, the mentality of the mob and the power of peer pressure was evident in Swami's actions and he was punished enough for what he did. Similarly, in Swami's new school, he gets very angry at his headmaster and instead of explaining his frustration, he throws his stick out the window. The result was the guilt he felt in his actions that led him to run away and quit playing cricket. In both cases, the children could see that if Swami had taken a deep breath and used his words to express how he felt instead of just using actions, he could have avoided a lot of trouble. After all, the end of this book is not what you call your classic happy ending. In fact, the reader wonders if Rajam ever forgave Swami for the way he treated him. Although this ending may seem unsatisfactory to some, I believe that this is the point, and the children who read this story will, after reading it, accurately portray the world they live in. Not every story has a happy ending, and I think it's important to show them that this is one of them.
