About Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital

Welcome!
Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital (LTMGH), as of today stands as one of the most reputed medical college and research institute in India. Abiding to our motto “Service through Excellence” we provide quality care and finest medical facilities to all the sects of the society.
The institute was actually started as the “Indian Military Hospital” in an empty military barracks, on 24th April 1947, with fifty beds and a single OPD. It was in 1950, that our institution was rightly named after one of the founders of Independent India; Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Over the years, we have now grown to more than 1500 bedded hospital with over 75,000 in-patient care per year.
LTMGH is Mumbai city’s one of the oldest major tertiary care referral center for patients located at Sion with close proximity to Eastern express highway. This strategic location enables our institution to provide convenient access to 24x7 trauma care facilities to the patients. Currently with 300 noteworthy senior faculty members and 661 resident doctors, we serve around 19 lakh OPD patients and perform over 55,000 major and minor surgeries annually. The total expenditure spent every year on these services is more than 2.5 crores.
In the year 1964, LTMGH established its Medical College, LTMMC with a batch of 60 MBBS students which gradually increased to 200 students (2019). LTMMC has successfully completed 55 years of imparting medical education to undergraduate students and 41 years to postgraduate students of various specialties. Our institution is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik and all diploma, degree and D.M, MCh seats are recognized by Medical Council of India. Annually we offer various courses under 23 broad specialty, 8 super specialty branches and several other fellowship courses. Apart from this, we provide Nursing course with an intake capacity of 100 seats, Physio Therapy (10 UG and 10 PG seats) & Occupational Therapy with (10 UG and 10 PG seats), 20 seats for B Sc Para Medical Technology (BPMT) course and 10 seats for the PG DMLT course. We also enroll students for M Sc courses in Biochemistry (by paper, by research and PhD). We support students from SNDT and other technical universities to acquire practical training in the dietary department as well as D.Pharm students with 750 hours of training in Pharmacy.
I would also like to take the opportunity to enumerate few of the many ‘firsts’ achieved by the faculty members. We established our Trauma care center in 1974 which today efficiently manages more than 3500 critically ill patients, 1500 emergency operations and five mass casualty situations per year. The first emergency cardiac stenting 1977, the first outdoor Pediatric Thalassemia transfusion centre in 1984, the first Donor Human milk bank in Asia in 1989, and first Skin bank, the first to conducted a cadaveric renal transplant in Maharashtra in 1997 were conducted successfully. Our Institute was amongst the first few centers globally to start dedicated Cardiac MRI services on a 3 Tesla scanner, the world’s first 3D printing of heart model to assist in cardiac surgery (for a series of DORV babies) is also another first to our credit. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been started since last 1 year with about 2000 patients being treated in this ultramodern chamber. In 2017 the Urology department entered the Guinness Book of World Records for successfully having removed the heaviest renal tumor weighing 5.2 kgs.
Under the Comprehensive Lactation Management Center, the Human milk Bank receives 800 – 1200 litres of milk benefiting 3000 to 5000 babies every year. Elaborate protocol and dedicated personals are involved for the receival, testing, disinfection and administration to babies who need it. Our institution has its own Burn Care unit which additional treatment through the Skin bank & Banana Leaf dressing providing relief to 500 burns patients annually. The Ophthalmology department also runs the Eye bank along with the Cornea Retrival program which is procured from the donor’s eyes after death. They successfully collected 336 corneas in the year 2018. The Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Centre (ZTCC) of Mumbai is also located in our institute. ZTCC is a not-for- profit organization started to promote organ donation in 2000 in Mumbai. The center is doing an excellent work in promoting and coordinating organ donation.

LTMMC is one of the ADR Monitoring Centres, approved under Pharmacovigilance Program of India (PvPI). The Department of Pharmacology releases the “Bulletin on Adverse Drug Reaction” to more than 150 medical colleges and hospitals in India, free of cost, in an attempt of spreading awareness about Pharmacovigilance activities among health care professionals in India.
I would also like to mention the commendable work of social services department run by the Medical Social Workers (MSW) which offers enumerable activities such as specialized cancer counselling, group therapy, rehabilitation, adoption guidance, school for the deaf and many more. Various charitable trusts furnish our institution with multiple funds and elements of peri-operative patient care on a daily and weekly basis. Schemes like the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana scheme aiding health insurance benefits to BPL (below poverty line) patients are helpful to the poor and the needy. The Poor Box Charitable Fund (PBCF) has spent 4.3 crores received through donations in providing imaging diagnostic services at a subsidized rate in the past year. Every year Shraddha Charitable trust distributes gift hampers and sweets during festive occasions to terminally and critically ill patients.
On the academic front, several international, national and regional conferences as well as workshops are conducted in the institute, multiple high-quality research and review articles have been published in indexed journals and chapters published in books. We undertake competitive examinations in various subjects and the winners are granted prizes from the donations received by the Silver Jubilee Fund of the institution. The college Annual cultural and sports activities are managed by a separate committee of students. The Staff and Research Society of our institute arranges Annual Scientific Meet, a multispecialty continuing medical education. I am also happy to inform you that the students conference “Trinity” which was started with the motto of “for the students, by the students and from the students”, within a short time has received overwhelming support and within a should time got the affiliation from MUHS and now it is also become an international conference.
Regarding the scientific research, approximately 20 sponsored and 250 academic research projects are conducted every year. The institutional Ethics Committee very elaborately securitize and monitor the projects. Our students have gather accolades by the presentation of their research works in many of the national and international conferences in India.
Last but not the least, I have to mention that our faculty members are doing a commendable job in the current COVID-19 epidemic. Even though our’s is not a dedicated COVID hospital still we are efficiently managing a large number of COVID patients. We never say NO to any patients. Apart from the routine work and management of the non Covid patients, we have made arrangements of about 400 beds for the management of COVID patients. We have converted several medicine wards into COVID ward and isolation wards. Our faculty members are also contributing with their expertise to other hospitals for COVID patients including the Seven Hills Hospital and the Covid Care Centre at BKC. Many of our frontline healthcare workers including more than 150 docotrs, more than 100 nurses and more than 200 other healthcare workers had contracted the COVID19 infection and many have joined back to duty after recovery. I am saddened to mention here that few of our healthcare workers have also lost their lives in line of duty. Still we stand undeterred by the situation and contributing our best for the better health of our patients.
With the great past and the present, I am sure the future will be even greater for academic and research avenues and most importantly in terms of patient care. Many of the operation theaters have been renovated to include modern infrastructure and latest instruments, we have elaborate plans for the expansion of the buildings. Institute’s ward bed strength will be increased to provide service to even larger population. Our pharmacy has the best and the latest of the medicines free of cost for our patients. The list drugs increase with the need to include latest drugs.
I have to admit that I am truly exhilarated with gratitude for being given an opportunity to be at the helm of the organization I am so attached. With a team of strong, able and knowledgeable colleagues I am sure we will take our organization to great heights and become an example for others.
