With this background, let us now look at Tableau licenses and pricing.
Tableau Licenses
Employees working with data have various roles and responsibilities like creating visualizations, finding insights, digging deep into cleaned data, simply looking at the key metrics, making decisions using the insights, etc. Tableau has created three different roles aligning to different data needs of organizations and individual users.
Tableau Creator
The creator license allows users to clean, transform, and connect to multiple sources to convert raw data into powerful visualizations by answering more profound questions. These users will dig deep into the data for meaningful insights, and hence, they need a robust and secure visual analytics platform. They will publish their visualizations and data sources to users in their organization, enabling them to use clean data and ready dashboards. So, in short, these users will create the data sources and valuable visualization content for further analysis or questioning by other users.
This license is best suited for users designing content and includes Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep Builder, and one Creator license of Tableau Server or Tableau Online. It costs $70 USD/user/month annually. The minimum requirement is at least one user. This license is also available for individual users.
Note: You cannot purchase Tableau Desktop but will now need to purchase the Tableau Creator license.
Tableau Explorers
Explorers are the organization's change harbingers trying to analyze data for business growth. They are comfortable working with data and will work on data sets and visualizations they receive from or are published by the creators to modify, dig deep, combine and find answers based on their requirements. They question the data to uncover insights not discovered in the preliminary reports shared with them.
This license includes one Explorer license of Tableau Server or Tableau Online. It costs $35 /user/month for Tableau Server and $42 /user/month billed annually for Tableau Online. The minimum requirement is at least five users.
Tableau Viewers
Viewers derive analytical insights from the data and dashboards curated by Creators and Explorers to make data-driven business decisions. Viewers like the company Executives can receive alerts, interact (view or filter) with the dashboards to look at data facts, high-level metrics, performance, and make informed decisions instead of just relying on intuition.
It includes one Viewer license of Tableau Server or Tableau Online. It costs $12 /user/month for Tableau Server and $15 /user/month billed annually for Tableau Online. The minimum requirement is at least a hundred users.
Embedded Analytics
Tableau also provides Embedded Analytics, using which organizations can create dashboards in Tableau and integrate them seamlessly into their already existing technologies and products. It includes a Tableau Server license and access to all the APIs and administration needed to integrate Tableau into its products. The pricing varies on several factors like the number of users, hardware requirements, and so on. You can contact Tableau for pricing.
