About Manipur Board
The Board of Secondary Education, Manipur was established by an Act of Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1972. By the amendment of the Act in 2004, besides the academic activities, the prescription of conditions for granting recognition of standard I and VIII was also entrusted to the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur.
At present 786 high and higher secondary schools (226 Government, 103 Government aided and 457 Private) are affiliated to the Board for certification at end of secondary stage i.e. class X. The schools in the state are either managed by the government or by private bodies. Besides the conduct of examination at the end of class X, the development of curriculum and syllabus, preparation, printing and distribution of text-booksfor class I to X are also done by the Board.
The Board conducts public examination at the end of class X for the courses studied in class X only. The Board does not conduct any other public examination, however a common question examination at the end of class VIII will be held w.e.f. the academic session 2010-2011 to maintain uniformity, standard and quality. The schools themselves will conduct the examination, check the answer scripts. However, the tabulation of marks is to be sent up to the Board and text-books Directorate of Education(Schools),Government of Manipur.
Curriculum & Syllabus
New syllabus for classes IX and X has been prepared in line with the NCF-2005 and introduced in class IX in 2008 and in class X the next year (i.e. 2009). The first HSLC Examination under this new syllabus was conducted in 2010.
Again the new syllabus for classes I to VIII prepared in line with NCF-2005 will be introduced w.e.f. the academic session 2011.
Examination Reform
20% of the total marks for each subjects assessed internally will be credited to the external examination w.e.f. the HSLC Examination, 2011.
Orientation
With the introduction of new syllabus, the Board had taken up a 4-day orientation programme for the in-service teachersof all schoolsnrecognized by the Board on teaching methodology and technique of evaluation.
The CCE
When the education scenario in the state deteriorated and the pass percentage of the HSLC Examination was passing a low phase, the Board took the opportunity of adopting the Scheme of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in 1993-94 in classes IX & X in scholastic areas. The Scheme was envisaged and gave much importance and Programme of Action-1992. It had indeed improved the pass percentage of the HSLC Examination, the attendance of students and teacher-pupil relation too.
Though the Board faced some problem in introducing the Scheme of CCE in the schools the Board had successfully achieved its desired goal. Now the Board, after successful implementation of the Scheme of CCE in classes IX & X, decided to extend the scheme in classes III to VIII too w.e.f. 2010 academic session in all the schools of the state recognized by the Board. The Co-Scholastic areas are also being taken up and the Scheme will also be introduced at the earliest.
The one-day Conference of the Bards of North East India being held on 22nd June, will discuss on implementation of CCE uniformly in all the Boards of North East and a common Framework will also be finalized.
