The Accidental Tourist by Bill Bryson is a short story that highlights the importance of gentle and elegant manners when traveling. In this story, we see that the narrator flies over 100,000 miles each year due to the nature of his job. Hence, we can say that the narrator is a casual tourist, although he does not enjoy traveling but still has to do so because of his job.

However, in his own words, he says that he is like a confused person who often forgets the roads and goes in the wrong lanes or gets himself stuck in closed doors. In this story, he takes us into some of his weirdest travel experiences where he unintentionally did some crazy things.

Most of their experience is based around airports or inside flights. Once while flying from Boston to England with family for Christmas, he forcibly opened the zip of his bag, breaking it and leaving all his belongings scattered on the ground. This caused embarrassment to him and those around him.

One day in flight he got up to tie his shoelaces, but then suddenly the person in the front seat pulled the full recliner, got crushed from his seat and with great difficulty managed to free himself. This indicates that he was absent while tying the shoelaces.

On other days, he would repeatedly spill alcohol on the lap of a woman sitting next to him. Due to this habit, one day his wife herself opened the lid of the food box. In another funny example, the narrator was busy making notes with a pen, but at the same time, he was sucking a part of his pen and talking to a young woman. When he visited the toilet, blue spots were found on his chin, mouth, hands etc.

There are some instances when the narrator forgot something due to his poor memory and got himself into trouble. The message of this story is that traveling is not for everyone.
