'The Nightingale and the Rose' is about a student who falls in love with a woman, the daughter of a professor. He has told her that if he brings her a red rose she will dance with him, but there are no roses in the student's garden. Nightingale overhears the beloved student lamenting for her hopeless love, and feels sorry for him. She knows how rare true love is, and knows it when she sees it. The prince is giving a ball the next night, but although the student and the woman he loves will both be there, she won't dance with him without a red rose.

A lizard, a butterfly, and a daisy all tell Nightingale that it is ridiculous that the young student is crying over a red rose, but Nightingale sympathizes with her. She flies to a nearby meadow and asks the rose tree to give her a red rose, and she will sing for it in return. But the rose tree says that it produces only white roses, so cannot give her what she wants. It suggests visiting the rose tree by sun-dial.

Nightingale proposes the same with this tree, but she replies that it only produces yellow roses, so can't help it. However, this leads him to the rose tree just below the student's window. However, although this rose tree produces red roses, winter has frozen its branches and may not produce any.

Nightingale asks if there is any way by which she can get a red rose for the student. The tree responds that the only way to produce a red rose is for the nightingale to sing to the moonlight, while allowing a thorn to pierce its heart, so its blood seeps into the tree and produces a red rose. Nightingale agrees, as she believes that love is more valuable than life, and the human heart is more precious than that.

She goes and tells the poor girl what she is going to do, but he doesn't understand her, because he only understands what is written in the books. The oak-tree in which the nightingale has built her nest, however, understands his words, and requests one last song from the nightingale. She sings, but the student, taking out his notebook, is rather unimpressed, as the bird's song has no practical use.

That night, Nightingale sings against the thorn with her heart, until it eventually pierces his heart while she sings a song of love. The blood of his heart seeps into the tree and produces a red rose, but by the time the flower is formed, the nightingale is dead.

The next morning, the student opens his window and sees a red rose on the tree, believing that it is only for good luck. Having plucked the rose, he goes to the house where his sweetheart lives, and presents her a red rose. But Chamberlain's nephew, another lover, has sent her jewelry, which is worth even more than flowers, so she says that she will dance with him instead of at the ball that night.

The student scolds the girl for her fickleness, and she calls her rude. He throws the red rose into the gutter, where a cart rolls over him. As he walks home, he decides to reject love in favor of logic and philosophy, which have more practical uses.
