A rear-guard soldier feels his way through the tunnel one step at a time. He blinks at his flashlight and flicks it back and forth, his beam flashes like an aggressive stare, and smells the eerie stench of the tunnel.

Various objects are left behind—bottles, containers, other obscure shapes that he cannot recognize in the dark. There is a shattered mirror and a discarded mattress. As he explores this tunnel under the ground, the battle continues at the very top.

The soldier travels and reaches for the wall. He sees a man slip off his feet, partly covered by a rug. The soldier bends down and tries to wake him by pulling the sleeping man's arm. The soldier asks for directions to the headquarters, but when the man does not answer, the soldier curses him (he is on the shore, hasn't slept for several days). The cop demands that the man get up and take him through the foul-smelling tunnel. Feeling wild, he kicks the soft, silent body, shines a torch on his terrifying face, which stares at him. That face still bears testimony to the terrible, painful death this man suffered ten days ago. The fingers of the dead man are on the wound covered in blood.

The soldier stumbles upon himself until he sees the pale, haunting light of dawn shining down a ladder. That stairway leads to a place where weary and confused soldiers (perhaps a ghost or the soldier's imagination) can hear the dull explosion of shells on the surface above. In the end, the soldier escapes through the tunnels, sweaty and still terrified. He exits the tunnel at dusk, leaving the hellish underground one step at a time.
