1. मुगल काल के दौरान सम्राट औरंगजेब ने शाही आवासीय क्षेत्र में पुंगी नामक एक संगीत वाद्ययंत्र बजाने पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया था। इस यंत्र से उत्पन्न ध्वनि कानों तक बिल्कुल भी नहीं जा रही थी। इस यंत्र द्वारा उत्पन्न नाई की ध्वनि अधिक मधुर और स्वीकार्य है। उन्होंने वाद्य यंत्र के पाइप के शरीर में कुछ बदलाव किए, जिसमें विभिन्न आकारों के सात छेद किए गए, जिससे लयबद्ध स्वर उत्पन्न हुए जो मधुर ध्वनि देते थे।
2. शाह, राजा के कक्ष में वाद्य यंत्र बजाया जाता था। इस बार इसकी खूब तारीफ हुई। वाद्य यंत्र एक नाई [नाई] द्वारा बजाया जाता था, इसलिए इसे शाह + नई यानी शहनाई नाम दिया गया। शहनाई एक 'मंगल वद्य' [शुभ यंत्र] बन जाती है क्योंकि यह शादी समारोह के साथ-साथ मंदिर संगीत का भी हिस्सा बन जाती है। इसे नौ वाद्ययंत्रों में से एक के रूप में मान्यता दी गई थी [नौबत] को शाही दरबारों में बजाने की अनुमति दी गई थी। उस समय तक यह सिर्फ एक 'लोक वाद्य' या लोक वाद्य था। बिस्मिल्लाह खान ने इस वाद्य यंत्र को एक ऐसे वाद्य यंत्र में बदल दिया, जिसमें शास्त्रीय संगीत के स्वर भी बजाए और निर्मित किए जा सकते थे। तो इस यंत्र को ऊपर उठाने का श्रेय उस्ताद बिस्मिल्लाह खां को जाता है।
3. एक छोटे लड़के के रूप में बिस्मिल्लाह खान अपने गांव में स्थित बिहारीजी मंदिर के दर्शन किया करते थे। इस मंदिर में डुमरांव के महाराजा के पीठासीन देवता हैं। जवान लड़के के रूप में खान साहब को हर शाम शाम की पूजा के बाद एक बड़ा लड्डू मिलता था। वह अपने पिता के साथ जाता था पैगंबर बक्स भी एक शहनाई वादक था और अपने पिता के नक्शेकदम पर चलता था। संगीतकारों के इस परिवार में बिस्मिल्लाह खान का जन्म 21 मार्च 1916 को हुआ था।
4. वह अपने मामा अली बक्स के मार्गदर्शन में शहनाई में आगे के प्रशिक्षण के लिए बनारस चले गए। उनके मामा बनारस के बालाजी [विष्णु] मंदिर में शहनाई बजाने के लिए कार्यरत थे। बिस्मिल्लाह खाँ ने बालाजी मंदिर के पास गंगा तट पर सीढ़ियों का अभ्यास करना शुरू किया।

6. उसी समय से बिस्मिल्लाह खान ने देश के अंदर और बाहर दोनों जगह परफॉर्मेस देना शुरू किया। भारत के बाहर उनका पहला प्रदर्शन अफगानिस्तान में था। फिल्म निर्देशक विजय भट्ट ने उनकी प्रतिभा को पहचाना और फिल्म बनाई जिसे बिस्मिल्लाह खान ने प्रमुखता से वाद्य यंत्र पर बजाया। श्री भट्ट ने अपनी फिल्म का नाम 'गूंज उठी शहनाई' रखा। इसी तरह कन्नड़ की एक और फिल्म 'सनाधि अपना' में खान साहब की शहनाई दिखाई गई। बिस्मिल्लाह खान की लोकप्रियता पूरी दुनिया में घूमने लगी। उन्होंने कान्स आर्ट फेस्टिवल और ओसाका ट्रेड फेयर में यूएसए के प्रसिद्ध लिंकन सेंटर हॉल में प्रदर्शन किया। तेहरान में एक सभागार का नाम उनके तेहर मस्जिद उस्ताद बिस्मिल्लाह खान के नाम पर रखा गया था।
7. इसके बाद उन्हें पद्मश्री, पद्म भूषण और पद्म विभूषण जैसे राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कारों से सम्मानित किया गया। 2001 में, उन्हें 'भारत रत्न' के सर्वोच्च नागरिक पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था।

1. During the Mughal period, Emperor Aurangzeb banned the playing of a musical instrument called Pungi in the royal residential area. The sound produced by this instrument was not reaching the ears at all. The sound of the barber produced by this instrument is more melodious and acceptable. He made some changes to the body of the instrument's pipe, making seven holes of different sizes, producing rhythmic notes that sounded melodious.
2. The instrument was played in the chamber of Shah, the king. This time it was highly praised. The instrument was played by a barber [nai], hence it was named shah + nai i.e. shehnai. The shehnai becomes a 'mangal vadya' [auspicious instrument] as it becomes a part of the wedding ceremony as well as the temple music. It was recognized as one of the nine instruments [naubat] allowed to be played in the royal courts. Till that time it was just a 'folk vadya' or folk instrument. Bismillah Khan transformed this instrument into an instrument in which the vocals of classical music could also be played and produced. So the credit for raising this yantra goes to Ustad Bismillah Khan.
3. As a young boy, Bismillah Khan used to visit the Bihariji temple in his village. This temple has the presiding deity of the Maharaja of Dumraon. As a young boy, Khan sahib used to get a big laddu every evening after the evening puja. He used to accompany his father Prophet Bux was also a shehnai player and followed in his father's footsteps. Bismillah Khan was born on 21 March 1916 in this family of musicians.
4. He went to Benares for further training in shehnai under the guidance of his maternal uncle Ali Bux. His maternal uncle was employed to play the shehnai in the Balaji [Vishnu] temple in Banaras. Bismillah Khan started practicing stairs on the banks of the Ganges near the Balaji temple.
5. At the age of 14, Bismillah Khan appeared in public for the first time on stage at the 2nd Sangeet Sammelan, where he accompanied his uncle to the shehnai. Ustad Faiz Khan highly appreciated his performance (mate). Bismillah Khan also used to play at the Red Port on India's first Independence Day.
6. From that time Bismillah Khan started performing both inside and outside the country. His first appearance outside India was in Afghanistan. Film director Vijay Bhatt recognized his talent and made the film, which Bismillah Khan played prominently on the instrument. Mr. Bhatt named his film 'Goonj Uthi Shehnai'. Similarly, Khan sahab's shehnai was shown in another Kannada film 'Sanadhi Apna'. The popularity of Bismillah Khan started roaming all over the world. He performed at the famous Lincoln Center Hall in the USA at the Cannes Art Festival and the Osaka Trade Fair. An auditorium in Tehran was named after his Tehr Masjid Ustad Bismillah Khan.
7. After this he was honored with national awards like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. In 2001, he was awarded the highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna'.
8. Although Bismillah Khan had the opportunity to travel around the world, he had a special love for Banaras, Dumraon and Ganga. He never liked remembering Banaras and Ganga.
