Too Many People, Too Few Trees is a text written by Moti Nisani, a teacher at a state university in the USA. In this lesson the author has tried to draw the attention of the people of the world towards the increasing population and the impact of deforestation on our environment. The whole topic is clearly considered in ten paragraphs of the text.
The author says that every day some people are born and die. This process of birth and death is being counted on this earth since life itself. But the death rate is slower than birth. This has led to a rapid increase in population. It is estimated that about 80 million people join every year. His vote. There are more people on this earth that he fed and cared for than there were about 100 or 200 years ago. This results in limiting the available natural resources or man-made resources. Demand will increase and supply will decrease.
It creates man-made pressure on our entire ecology. More space will be needed to live, more food to satisfy our hunger, more water to drink but also unpolluted water etc.
what happens then ? The cutting of trees will destroy the forest. Rivers become polluted, soil erosion will lead to flooding, flora and fauna will be reduced to the extent of extinction and people will not have fresh air to survive.
Isn't this causing a worrying situation? In addition, the surface of the earth will turn into a desert, which will lead to the depletion of other natural resources such as natural gas, petrol, etc. The ozone layer that protects humans will become thinner and the greenhouse effect on Earth will disappear.
About 60,000 Americans die each year from respiratory diseases due to man-made pollution. Fourteen Americans die every day because of asthma. The situation is even worse in Kathmandu, Mexico, Shanghai and Los Angeles.
The only solution is to control population growth. This can be done through determination. Countries such as China, Thailand and Egypt have reached an alarming position and are capable of slowing population growth. It united the people through media dissemination and family planning methods made available to the common man by the government at all levels.
Another area that needs immediate attention is to stop felling of trees and start afforestation. Forests are being cut to build houses, furniture, factories and other commercial purposes such as a manufacturer of paper for printing. How long can we afford it? Earlier in this country, forests covered about 40% of the total land area of the earth. By the end of this century this figure will come down to 25%, a loss of 15% which is going to affect human life on earth.
There will be landslides, soil erosion, loss of plant and animal species, and rivers will be silted up. The perfect ecological balance is not fit to live for a day.
We have to be alert, alert and take immediate action to reverse the process of deforestation by stopping felling of trees and start planting more trees.
