पुरु उत्तर भारत का एक राजा था। वे एक वीर सैनिक और सच्चे देशभक्त थे।

सिकंदर पुरु को अपना जागीरदार बनाना चाहता था। इसलिए उसने पुरु को एक प्रस्ताव भेजा कि यदि वह उसका जागीरदार बनने के लिए सहमत हो गया तो वह पुरु से युद्ध नहीं करेगा। लेकिन पुरु ने उनके प्रस्ताव को अस्वीकार कर दिया। तो सिकंदर की सेना और पुरु की सेना के बीच एक महान युद्ध हुआ। यह इतना बड़ा युद्ध था कि पुरु की सेना को हराने के लिए सिकंदर की सेना को बहुत पसीना बहाना पड़ा और अपनी पूरी कोशिश करनी पड़ी। युद्ध में हर भारतीय सैनिक बाघ की तरह लड़ा। भारतीय सैनिकों और सेनापतियों ने यूनानी सैनिकों और सेनापतियों की तुलना में अधिक बहादुरी से लड़ाई लड़ी। बू भारतीय सेनापति ग्रीक सेनापतियों की तुलना में कम कुशल थे। उन्होंने युद्ध के पुराने तरीकों का पालन किया। वे अपने हाथियों पर बहुत अधिक निर्भर थे। अंत में यूनानी पुरु की सेना को हराने में सफल रहे।

सिकंदर अपने शिविर में अपने यूनानी सेनापतियों के साथ चर्चा कर रहा था कि झेलम की लड़ाई कैसे हुई। सिकंदर और सेनापतियों ने स्वीकार किया कि झेलम की लड़ाई न केवल उनके देश के इतिहास में बल्कि दुनिया के इतिहास में भी घटेगी। सभी ने भारतीय सेना की बहादुरी और महान लड़ाई के लिए प्रशंसा की, लेकिन युद्ध के अपने गरीब, पुराने तरीकों के लिए उन पर दया की।

इसी बीच एक सिपाही वहां आया और कहा कि पुरु को जंजीरों में बांधकर शिविर में लाया गया है। तब सिकंदर ने कहा कि पुरु राजा है और राजा को जंजीरों में नहीं बांधना चाहिए। इसलिए उसने उन्हें जंजीरें हटाने और उसे वहाँ लाने का आदेश दिया। शुद्ध आया।

सिकंदर ने पुरु से पूछा कि उसने उसका प्रस्ताव क्यों ठुकरा दिया। पुरु ने उत्तर दिया कि वह एक वैध राजा था और इसलिए वह कभी भी जागीरदार नहीं बनना चाहेगा। पुरु ने कहा कि एक देशभक्त राजा को राजा होने पर गर्व होना चाहिए अन्यथा वह राजा नहीं हो सकता। सिकंदर ने पुरु की बहादुरी और स्वाभिमान की प्रशंसा की। तो उसने कहा कि वह पुरु से दोस्ती करना चाहता है। पुरु ने कहा कि वह ऐसा करने के लिए सहमत होगा बशर्ते उसका राज्य स्वतंत्र रहे और सिकंदर ने उसे अपने बराबर माना। सिकंदर ने उसे उसका राज्य वापस दे दिया और पुरु से दोस्ती कर ली। पुरु ने सिकंदर के व्यक्तित्व की प्रशंसा की और उसे सिकंदर महान कहा।

But the Indian generals were less efficient than the Greek generals. He followed the old ways of warfare. They were heavily dependent on their elephants. In the end the Greeks were successful in defeating Puru's army.

Puru continued to fight even after the others left the field. Puru killed at least a hundred Greek soldiers with his sword. But he was badly wounded and so the Greek generals were able to capture him. Puru was chained and brought to Alexander's camp on the banks of the Jhelum.

Alexander was discussing with his Greek generals in his camp how the battle of Jhelum took place. Alexander and the generals accepted that the Battle of Jhelum would not only happen in the history of their country but also in the history of the world. Everyone praised the Indian Army for its bravery and great fighting, but pity them for their poor, old ways of warfare.

Meanwhile a constable came there and said that Puru has been brought to the camp in chains. Then Sikandar said that Puru is the king and the king should not be bound in chains. So he ordered them to remove the chains and bring him there. Came clean.

Sikandar asked Puru why he refused his offer. Puru replied that he was a legitimate king and hence he would never want to become a vassal. Puru said that a patriotic king should be proud to be a king otherwise he cannot be a king. Sikandar praised Puru for his bravery and self-respect. So he said that he wants to be friends with Puru. Puru said that he would agree to do so provided his kingdom remained independent and Alexander considered him as his equal. Sikandar gave him his kingdom back and befriended Puru. Puru praised the personality of Alexander and called him Alexander the Great.
