Agneepath Scheme - Wide Acceptance

Reasons for Criticisms

Many candidates do not find this scheme much more effective and attractive. The primary reason for the criticisms is the age limit. Many youngsters are unemployed but they are unable to fit into the eligibility criteria of this scheme. The second major reason is the short term of service. The biggest question is that what will they do after 4 years?

Although, the government is trying to assure candidates by offering job priorities but it does not seem effective. Another issue is that, before launching, the scheme was not opened to the public not even discussed in the parliament. The removal of pension and gratuity is another disappointment of the Agneepath scheme.

Arising Nationwide Protests

Soon after the declaration of the Agneepath scheme, people started protesting against it. The first news was heard from Bihar a day after the announcement on 15 June 2022. Soon the fire spread to many states of India covering Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, etc.

Youths began to harm public property by burning the trains and buses. This protest affected the lives of people as many trains were canceled, shutting down internet services, etc. Protesting organizations also called a countrywide strike on 20 June 2022 called “Bharat Band” demanding a rollback of the scheme.

This scheme aimed to give more youth faces to the Indian Army. About 46,000 candidates will be recruited every year under this scheme. However, only candidates belonging to the age groups 17.5 to 21 will be eligible to apply for this Agnipath Yojana.

The soldiers selected for this scheme will be given a special name known as “Agniveers”. The service period of Agniveers will be only 4 years including 6 months of training. After 4 years, only 25% of soldiers will be kept as permanent depending on their performance while others will be sent home.

What Benefits are Offered by this Scheme?

Agniveers are expected to enjoy many benefits under this scheme. In the first year of service, candidates will be given 30,000 per month as their salary which will be later increased up to 40,000 by the end of the service. However, only 70 % of the salary will be given in hand rest of 30 % will be deducted for the “Seva Nidhi” package. This package will remain free from taxes.

After four years of service, Agniveers will be given a “Seva Nidhi” package of 11.71 Lakh. This is the sum of their deducted salary along with the equal contribution of the government with interest. During the four years of service, Agniveers will be provided life insurance of 48 lakhs and 1 crore will be given to the family in case of death.

Apart from financial benefits, candidates can generate skills like discipline, physical fitness, teamwork, etc. They will be awarded the certification of their training that will be helpful in other future aspects.

Youths are dissatisfied with the age limit and short service period of this scheme. Although the government has decided to increase the age limit to 23 years it was unable to make any difference in the existing protest. In many areas, students are burning trains and harming government properties. Now the youths are demanding the government take back this scheme.
