In India’ National Integration Day is celebrated on 19th November on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi. She was the only woman Prime Minister of India till date. She belonged to the Indian National Congress and was the daughter of First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
National Integration Council
The National Integration council is a government advisory body constituting of senior ministers and notable public figures, who advise the government on issues like communalism, casteism, and regionalism. The advisory community’s job is to promote communal harmony and establish national integration among the people.
The council was formed in 1961 under the Prime Ministership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then regular meetings were held in which the council recommended the government on ways to promote national integration.
The sixteenth and last meeting of the National Integration Council was held on 23rd September 2013. In the meeting, it was decided to observe the birth anniversary of Smt. Indira Gandhi as National Integration Day every year.
